About the Annuity Calculator
$100,000 paid out over 20 years at 5% is $659.96 a month, $158,390.40 in total and $58,390.40 of interest: payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the annual rate ÷ 12 and n is the number of months. In growth mode the annuity calculator adds a monthly deposit instead: $10,000 plus $500 a month at 5% for 20 years becomes $232,643.24. Payout mode can also solve for the lump sum, the rate or the duration, and both modes take payments from daily to once a year.

Payout mode: the balance is paid out in equal payments at the end of each month, with the rate compounded monthly. For another amount, scale the payment: $200,000 pays twice as much, give or take a cent of rounding.

Payout mode. The rate is divided by the number of payments a year and compounded once per payment, so fewer, larger payments carry more interest.
How to use this tool
- Choose Payout (Withdrawal) to turn a lump sum into payments, or Growth (Accumulation) to grow a starting sum with deposits, and pick how often payments are made: monthly by default, or quarterly, semiannual, annual, biweekly, weekly or daily.
- In payout mode, choose what to solve for: the payment, the lump sum needed, the interest rate needed or how long the money lasts. Enter the other three figures.
- In growth mode, enter the starting principal, the contribution per period, the duration in years and the interest rate.
- Read the result, the total interest and the total payout or total paid in, and open the year-by-year balance table under it.
Frequently asked questions
- How much monthly income does a $100,000 annuity give?
- At 5% it is $1,060.66 a month for 10 years, $659.96 for 20 years and $536.82 for 30 years. At 0% the same sum over 20 years is $416.67 a month, so the rate adds $243.29 a month in that case.
- How do I calculate an annuity payment by hand?
- Divide the annual rate by 12 to get r and multiply the years by 12 to get n. The payment is P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n). For $100,000 at 5% over 20 years, r = 0.05 ÷ 12 and n = 240, which gives $659.96.
- Does this calculate a life annuity or an insurance quote?
- No. Payout mode pays out a lump sum over a fixed number of years at a fixed rate. It has no life expectancy, no insurer pricing, no fees and no taxes, and it does not value a structured settlement. A quote from an insurance company depends on your age, the product and its charges, so it will differ.
- Are the payments at the start or the end of the month?
- The end, and there is no switch for payments at the start. You can work an annuity due out by hand: it is the end-of-month payment divided by 1 + r, which for $100,000 at 5% over 20 years is $657.22 instead of $659.96.
- How long will $100,000 last at $800 a month?
- At 5%, 14.75 years: 177 payments, the last one smaller, $141,550.03 paid out in total. Choose Solve for: duration. The same tool finds the lump sum a payment needs ($151,525.31 for $1,000 a month over 20 years at 5%) or the rate ($700 a month for 20 years from $100,000 needs 5.7135%). A payment that does not cover the interest never runs the money out, and the tool says so.
- How much will $500 a month grow to?
- At 5% it becomes $77,641.14 after 10 years, $205,516.83 after 20 and $416,129.32 after 30. After 20 years $120,000 of that is your deposits and $85,516.83 is interest.
