About the Blood Donation Recovery Calculator
Stanford Blood Center gives 56 days between whole blood donations, 28 days for plasma, 7 for platelets and about 4 months for double red cells, which this tool counts as 112 days. After a whole blood donation on March 1, 2024 you can give again on April 26, 2024. The red-cell figure shown with it is a rough estimate, the iron figure is about 24 weeks or longer for most donors who take no iron supplements, and your donation center decides when you can give again.
Waiting periods and next eligible dates for a March 1, 2024 donation
| Donation type | Waiting period | Next eligible date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole blood | 56 days | April 26, 2024 | Stanford Blood Center |
| Double red cells | 112 days used here | June 21, 2024 | Stanford says about 4 months; 112 days is this tool’s conversion |
| Platelets | 7 days | March 8, 2024 | Stanford Blood Center (the article gives no unit; days are used) |
| Plasma | 28 days | March 29, 2024 | Stanford Blood Center (4 weeks) |
The next eligible date is the donation date plus the waiting period. Your donation center decides when you can give again.
Recovery estimates for whole blood and where each comes from
| Estimate | Starting figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Plasma | Back to normal within a few days (text only) | Stanford Blood Center |
| Platelet count | Recovers within a week (text only) | Stanford Blood Center |
| Red cells | 6 weeks | Middle of Stanford’s 4 to 8 weeks |
| Iron stores | about 24 weeks or longer | Kiss et al., JAMA 2015: without iron supplements, 67% of donors had not recovered iron stores by 168 days; with low-dose iron the median was 76 days |
| Double red cells | 12 weeks for red cells, about 24 weeks or longer for iron | Red cells: this tool’s assumption, twice the whole-blood figure. Iron: the same 24 weeks, as no other figure is sourced |
Platelet and plasma donations return most red cells to the donor, so no red-cell or iron figure is shown for them.
How the optional fields scale a whole blood donation on March 1, 2024
| Donor | Scale | Red cells | Iron stores | Iron date shown (no iron supplements) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Male (preselected), volume and age blank | 1.00 | 6 weeks | about 24 weeks or longer | August 16, 2024 |
| Age 55, male | 1.12 | 7 weeks | about 27 weeks or longer | September 6, 2024 |
| Female, volume and age blank | 1.10 | 7 weeks | about 26 weeks or longer | August 30, 2024 |
| Age 68, female, 500 mL | 1.53 | 9 weeks | about 37 weeks or longer | November 15, 2024 |
Scale = volume ÷ 450 mL (kept between 0.7 and 2) × 1.12 from age 50 or 1.25 from age 65 × 1.1 for female donors. All of these factors are this tool’s assumptions. The scale moves the red-cell figure either way; it can lengthen the iron figure but never puts it under the trial’s 24 weeks.
How to use this tool
- Choose the donation type and enter the date of your last donation.
- Optionally add the donated volume in mL and your age (17 to 75), and set Sex, which starts on male. These scale the red-cell estimate and can lengthen the iron figure.
- Read the next eligible date and the recovery estimates, and check the rules with your donation center.
Frequently asked questions
- How long do I have to wait between blood donations?
- Count the waiting period from the day you gave. A whole blood donation on March 1, 2024 makes you eligible again on April 26, 2024; a plasma donation that day gives March 29 and a platelet donation March 8. Rules differ between blood services and countries, so check the date with your own center.
- How long does it take red blood cells to recover after donating blood?
- Stanford says replacing the red cells lost in a whole blood donation typically takes 4 to 8 weeks. This tool starts from 6 weeks, the middle of that range, so a donor with no optional fields gets 6 weeks and a 55-year-old gets 7.
- How long does it take to recover iron after donating blood?
- For most donors who take no iron supplements, about 24 weeks or longer. In a 2015 trial of 215 whole blood donors, 67% of those who took no iron had still not rebuilt their iron stores 168 days, or 24 weeks, after giving. Those who took a 37.5 mg iron tablet daily recovered in a median of 76 days, and 21 days for donors whose iron stores were low to start with. The tool assumes no iron tablets and shows 24 weeks, so a March 1, 2024 donation shows an iron date of August 16, 2024; two thirds of the trial’s donors who took no iron needed longer. Ask your donation center or doctor before taking iron tablets.
- How long after a double red cell donation can I donate again?
- Stanford says about 4 months. The tool counts 112 days, so a double red donation on March 1, 2024 gives June 21, 2024. Check the exact interval with your donation center.
- Does the date it shows mean I am fit to donate?
- No. It only adds the waiting period to your donation date. Eligibility depends on more than the calendar, and your donation center decides when you can give again. The estimates here are not medical advice.
