About the Discount Calculator
30% off $80 is $56, a saving of $24. The rule is sale price = original price × (1 − percent off ÷ 100). The discount calculator also stacks a second discount on the reduced price, where 20% off followed by 10% off comes to 28% off, not 30%.
Sale price of a $100 item
| Discount | You save | Sale price |
|---|---|---|
| 10% off | $10.00 | $90.00 |
| 15% off | $15.00 | $85.00 |
| 20% off | $20.00 | $80.00 |
| 25% off | $25.00 | $75.00 |
| 30% off | $30.00 | $70.00 |
| 40% off | $40.00 | $60.00 |
| 50% off | $50.00 | $50.00 |
| 60% off | $60.00 | $40.00 |
| 70% off | $70.00 | $30.00 |
| 75% off | $75.00 | $25.00 |
On $100 the saving in dollars equals the percentage. For another price the saving scales: 20% off $60 saves $12 and leaves $48.
Stacked discounts on a $100 item
| Discounts | Combined discount | After the first discount | Final price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20% + 10% | 28% | $80.00 | $72.00 |
| 25% + 10% | 32.5% | $75.00 | $67.50 |
| 30% + 10% | 37% | $70.00 | $63.00 |
| 30% + 20% | 44% | $70.00 | $56.00 |
| 40% + 20% | 52% | $60.00 | $48.00 |
| 50% + 10% | 55% | $50.00 | $45.00 |
| 50% + 20% | 60% | $50.00 | $40.00 |
| 50% + 25% | 62.5% | $50.00 | $37.50 |
| 50% + 50% | 75% | $50.00 | $25.00 |
The second discount applies to the reduced price. The order does not matter: 30% then 20% gives the same $56.00 as 20% then 30%.
Frequently asked questions
- What is 30% off $80?
- $56.00. 30% of $80 is $24.00, and $80.00 − $24.00 = $56.00.
- How do I work out a percent off in my head?
- Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then scale it. For 30% off $80, 10% is $8, so 30% is $24 and the price is $56. For 15% off $120, 10% is $12 and half of that is $6, so you save $18 and pay $102.
- Is 20% off plus an extra 10% the same as 30% off?
- No. The extra 10% is taken from the reduced price. On $100, 20% off leaves $80 and 10% off that leaves $72, which is 28% off in total. A straight 30% off would be $70.
- Does it matter which discount is applied first?
- Not for percentages. 50% then 20% and 20% then 50% both leave $40 on a $100 item, 60% off in total.
- How much do I save with 25% off $59.99?
- $15.00. The sale price is $44.99.
- How do I find the original price before a discount?
- Choose The original price under Find, then enter the sale price and the discount. Original = sale price ÷ (1 − percent ÷ 100), rounded to the cent: $59.99 after 25% off was $79.99. For an amount off, add it back: $85 after $15 off was $100. To get the percent off from two prices, choose The discount percentage: $100 down to $80 is 20% off.
