The Free Recoil Formula

Computes free recoil energy using E = ((W_b × V_b + 4700 × W_p)²) / (64.348 × W_g), where W_b is bullet weight (grains), V_b is muzzle velocity (fps), W_p is powder charge (grains), and W_g is firearm weight (lbs). The constant 4700 represents the approximate velocity of propellant gases (fps), and 64.348 equals 2 × standard gravity (ft/s²). Recoil velocity and momentum are derived from the same momentum calculation. Metric inputs (grams, m/s, kg) are converted to imperial before applying the formula, and results are displayed in both unit systems.

Fun Fact: The .308 Winchester cartridge — one of the most popular hunting and sniper rounds worldwide — produces about 15.8 ft-lbs of free recoil energy from a typical 8-lb rifle, which is roughly the same kinetic energy as a baseball thrown at 95 mph.
