Grade Calculator

Weighted course grade from assignment scores and weights: the average and a letter on a 90, 80, 70, 60 scale. Weights need not add up to 100. How it works

Scale: A 90 and up, B 80 and up, C 70 and up, D 60 and up, F below 60. Weights are divided by their own total.

About the Grade Calculator

A 100 weighted 50 and a 50 weighted 50 average 75%, a C on this scale. The weighted grade calculator computes average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weights), so the weights do not have to add up to 100. Letters use A from 90, B from 80, C from 70, D from 60 and F below 60.

Average = 8,420 ÷ 100 = 84.20%, a B on the 90, 80, 70, 60 scale.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a grade and a weight for each assignment or category, and use Add Assignment for more rows. Press Letter to pick letter grades instead of percentages.
  2. Leave a row empty to ignore it. A row with only a grade or only a weight shows a message.
  3. Read the course average and the letter. The page shows the weight total when it is not 100, and a link carries the average to the Final Grade Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the products and divide by the total of the weights. Grades of 90, 82, 76 and 88 with weights of 20, 20, 25 and 35 give (1,800 + 1,640 + 1,900 + 3,080) ÷ 100 = 84.20%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
The weights are divided by their own total, so the average is still a weighted average of what you entered. Grades of 90, 82 and 76 with weights of 20, 20 and 25 total 65 and average 82.15%. The page shows the total so you can check it against the syllabus.
Can I enter extra credit?
Yes, a grade can be up to 200. A grade of 88 with weight 100 and a 110 with weight 5 average 89.05%.
What grade do I need on the final?
This calculator does not solve for it; the Final Grade Calculator does, and the link under the result opens it with your average as the current grade. By hand: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. With a current 84 on 65% of the grade, a final worth 35% and a target of 85, you need (85 − 54.6) ÷ 0.35 = 86.86. Entering 86.9 gives 85.02%. A target of 90 would need 101.14, which only extra credit allows.
Can I enter letter grades like B+ instead of percentages?
Yes. Press Letter and pick a letter for each row. Each counts as one fixed figure: A+ 98, A 95, A- 91, B+ 88, B 85, B- 81, C+ 78, C 75, C- 71, D+ 68, D 65, D- 61, F 0. B+, A- and C weighted 30, 30 and 40 give 83.70%, a B. The result letter uses A from 90, B from 80, C from 70, D from 60 and F below 60, with no plus or minus. Your school’s scale may differ.
Are my grades saved?
The rows are kept in this browser’s local storage, and the Clear Saved Values button removes them.
