About the GPA Calculator

GPA is total quality points divided by total credits, where a course’s quality points are its grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0) times its credits. An A, a B+ and an A− in 3-credit courses plus a B in a 4-credit course is 45 quality points over 13 credits, a 3.46. This GPA calculator uses the unweighted 4.0 scale and can combine the term with earlier ones into a cumulative figure.

A+ counts as 4.0, the same as A. Schools set their own scales: the College Board notes that some do not use pluses and minuses and others have different grade cutoffs. Check the key on your transcript.

The term is five 3-credit courses with the same grade. The more credits you already have, the less one term moves the average.

How to use this tool

  1. For each course, enter the credits and pick the letter grade. The course name is only a label.
  2. Use Add Course for another row, or the trash button to remove one.
  3. Read the Semester GPA, the total credits and the total quality points.
  4. For a cumulative GPA, fill in Current cumulative GPA and Credits completed under Earlier terms.
  5. Optional: under Goal GPA, enter the cumulative GPA you want and the credits still to take to see the average grade they need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in another 3-credit course is (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.50.
What GPA do I need in my remaining classes to reach my goal?
Fill in Goal GPA and Credits still to take. The needed average is (goal × all credits − quality points so far) ÷ credits left, counting the courses on the page and any earlier terms. With the opening semester of 45.00 points over 13 credits, a 3.0 goal with 12 credits left needs (75 − 45) ÷ 12 = 2.50, about a B− in every course. A 3.8 goal would need 4.17, above the 4.0 top of the scale, so the page says it is out of reach and that straight A grades would give 3.72.
Does it calculate a weighted GPA for honors and AP classes?
No. It is unweighted: an A is 4.0 whatever the level of the course. The College Board notes that some schools use a weighted system in which AP and honors classes are assigned higher GPA points.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply your current cumulative GPA by the credits behind it, add this term’s quality points, and divide by all the credits together. A 3.20 over 60 credits plus a term of 45.00 quality points over 13 credits is (192 + 45) ÷ 73 = 3.25.
How much can one semester raise my GPA?
It depends on how many credits you already have. A 15-credit term of straight A grades lifts a 3.00 to 3.33 after 30 earlier credits, to 3.20 after 60, and to 3.14 after 90.
Do credits matter, or only the grades?
Credits are the weights. An A in a 4-credit course with a C in a 1-credit course is a 3.60. Swap the credits and the same two grades give a 2.40.
