About the GPA to US GPA (4.0 Scale)
An 8.5 out of 10 is 3.40 on the US 4.0 scale. The converter divides your grade by the top of your scale and multiplies by 4, so 85% is also 3.40 and 4 out of 5 is 3.20.
10-point and 100-point grades on the US 4.0 scale
| Grade out of 10 | Grade out of 100 or % | US GPA | Letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 60 | 2.40 | C+ |
| 7 | 70 | 2.80 | B- |
| 7.5 | 75 | 3.00 | B |
| 8 | 80 | 3.20 | B+ |
| 8.5 | 85 | 3.40 | B+ |
| 9 | 90 | 3.60 | A- |
| 9.5 | 95 | 3.80 | A |
Same rescale for both columns: 8 out of 10 and 80 out of 100 are both 80% of the scale maximum.
Supported inputs
- Source scales: 4, 5, 10, 100, percentage, or a custom maximum from 1 to 1,000
- Your grade from 0 up to the scale maximum, as one average or course by course with credits
Supported outputs
- US GPA from 0.00 to 4.00, to two decimals
- A letter grade from the converter’s own cut-offs (A+ from 3.85 down to F below 1.00)
Methodology
US GPA = grade ÷ scale maximum × 4.0, kept between 0.00 and 4.00 and rounded to two decimals. Percentage uses a maximum of 100. A grade above the scale maximum gives no result.
Assumptions
- The rescale treats every step of your scale as worth the same; it ignores class rank and how strictly your school grades. Credits count only in Course by course mode.
- Admissions offices and credential evaluators such as WES convert course by course with country-specific tables, and their figure is the one an application uses.
How to use this tool
- Pick the scale your transcript uses: 10-point, 100-point, 4-point, 5-point, percentage, or Other with your own maximum.
- Type your average. Under Other, set the scale maximum as well, for example 20 for a French-style mark out of 20.
- Read the 4.0 figure and the letter grade under it. For a credit-weighted figure, press Course by course and enter each course’s grade and credits.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does a 60 out of 100 come out as only 2.40?
- The converter assumes 100 is the best possible mark and spreads the 4.0 scale evenly from 0 to 100, so 60 lands at 60% of 4.0. In many countries 60 is a solid pass and top marks above 90 are rare; an evaluator who knows the country would usually place it higher.
- How do I convert a 5-point GPA to a 4.0?
- Choose the 5-point scale and enter your average. It is multiplied by 4/5: 4.5 becomes 3.60 (A-), 4.0 becomes 3.20 (B+) and 3.5 becomes 2.80 (B-).
- Does it work for scales where 1 is the best grade?
- No. The German 1.0 to 5.0 scale and others where a lower number is better would come out backwards. Use a converter or evaluator that knows that country’s scale.
- Can I convert course by course with credits?
- Yes. Press Course by course and enter each grade and its credits. Each grade is rescaled on its own (grade ÷ scale maximum × 4.0) and the results are averaged by credits. On a 10-point scale a 9 with 4 credits and a 7 with 2 credits give 3.33 (B+); with the credits swapped they give 3.07 (B). It is still a straight-line estimate, not the country tables an evaluator uses.
- Can I put this number on a US application?
- Only if the school asks for your own estimate. Where it asks for an official or evaluated GPA, send your transcript in its original scale or the credential evaluator’s report.
