Applications

Convert horsepower to kilowatts and vice versa for all four horsepower types — mechanical (engine power), metric/PS (European engine ratings), electric (motor ratings), and boiler (steam generation). Useful for automotive diagnostics, engine tuning, motor specifications, and power plant operations.

Conversion Formulas

Mechanical HP: 1 hp(I) = 0.7457 kW. Metric/PS: 1 hp(M) = 0.73549875 kW. Electric HP: 1 hp(E) = 0.746 kW. Boiler HP: 1 hp(S) = 9.8095 kW. For hp to kW: kW = hp × factor. For kW to hp: hp = kW ÷ factor.

Fun Fact: James Watt originally defined horsepower in the 1780s as the amount of work a horse could do over a minute — 33,000 ft·lb per minute — which equals approximately 0.7457 kW. Modern dynamometers still use this unit for rating engine power!
