Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal body weight from height and sex by the Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas, their average, and the Peterson weight at a BMI you choose. How it works

Weight at BMI 22 (Peterson 2016)

67.7 kg

Weight = 2.2 × BMI + 3.5 × BMI × (height in m − 1.5). It is not part of the average above.

For comparison, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 (the range between the WHO adult underweight and overweight cut-offs) is 56.7 to 76.3 kg at this height. BMI does not tell muscle from fat.

These formulas were written for adults, mainly for dosing drugs and for insurance height-weight tables. They are not health targets or a measure of what weight is right for you: muscle mass, bone structure, age and body composition are not in them. Ask a doctor or dietitian about a weight goal.

About the Ideal Weight Calculator

A 165 cm woman gets 57.7 kg as the average of the four ideal body weight formulas: Devine 56.9, Robinson 57.4, Miller 59.8 and Hamwi 56.4 kg. Each formula is a base weight at 5 ft plus a fixed amount per inch above it, fitted to insurance height-weight tables and used mainly in drug dosing; none of them is a health target. Apart from the average, the page gives the Peterson (2016) weight at a BMI you choose, 22 by default: 2.2 × BMI + 3.5 × BMI × (height in m − 1.5), which is 60.0 kg at 165 cm.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick Metric (cm) or Imperial (ft/in) and the sex: each formula has a male and a female version.
  2. Enter the height, from 140 to 250 cm (4 ft 7 in to 8 ft 2 in).
  3. Read the average, the four formulas and their range, and the weight at a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for the same height.
  4. Optionally change the target BMI (20 to 40, default 22) for the Peterson result, which is shown separately and is not part of the average.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 10 in man?
159.4 lb on average: Devine 160.9, Robinson 156.5, Miller 155.0 and Hamwi 165.3 lb. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at that height is 128.9 to 173.5 lb.
What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 5 in woman?
127.3 lb on average, with the four formulas from 124.6 lb (Hamwi) to 132.1 lb (Miller). A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at 5 ft 5 in is 111.2 to 149.6 lb.
Which ideal body weight formula is the most accurate?
None of them measures a body; each turns height into a reference weight. Pai and Paloucek (2000) traced them to agreeing height-weight tables and concluded that any one may be used to estimate IBW. If you need one number, Devine’s is the formula drug dosing took up first. They agree closely in the middle of the height range and spread apart at the ends: 139.8 to 142.6 lb for a 5 ft 6 in man, 173.6 to 201.1 lb for a 6 ft 4 in man.
Why is ideal body weight used for drug dosing?
Devine published his formula in 1974 to estimate drug clearance in obese patients. Ideal body weight came to be used as a stand-in for lean body weight, and Pai and Paloucek (2000) report that Devine’s formula was taken up because the pharmacokinetics of some drugs correlated with it. Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) refitted the line to Metropolitan Life height-weight tables.
How is ideal weight different from a BMI range?
The formulas give one weight for a height and sex. BMI gives a band that is the same for men and women: at 175 cm, 18.5 to 24.9 is 56.7 to 76.3 kg. The WHO counts an adult BMI under 18.5 as underweight and 25 or more as overweight, and the page shows the band between them for comparison. Neither tells muscle from fat.
Does the ideal weight formula work under 5 feet?
The formulas start at 5 ft (152.4 cm). Below it the page subtracts the per-inch amount for each inch under 5 ft, as Robinson and colleagues did, and adds a note that the figures are rough. A 150 cm woman gets 43.3 kg (Devine) to 51.8 kg (Miller). Heights under 140 cm are not accepted.
