The Formula
This calculator estimates yarn requirements using base yardage values for common project types at standard sizes. The gauge adjustment factor (5 / your gauge) accounts for tighter or looser knitting tension. The calculator uses typical skein yardages: Lace 400yd, Fingering 350yd, Sport 300yd, DK 275yd, Worsted 220yd, Bulky 120yd, Super Bulky 80yd.
Fun Fact: The world's largest knitting needle measures over 6 feet long and was used to create a 30-foot-wide scarf. Knitting dates back to the 11th century, with the earliest known knitted items originating from Egypt.
