Each click is one beat and the tempo counts beats per minute. In /8 a beat is an eighth note, so 6/8 at 120 is six eighth notes in three seconds.

About the Metronome
A metronome at 120 BPM clicks every 500 ms: the time between beats is 60,000 ÷ BPM in milliseconds. This metronome runs from 40 to 240 BPM with 1 to 12 beats per bar over /4 or /8 and a speed trainer that raises the tempo every few bars; the tempo name, from Grave to Presto, follows the speed.

The beat is 60,000 ÷ BPM, an eighth-note click falls halfway through it and the two triplet clicks fall a third and two thirds of the way through. Values are rounded to the nearest millisecond.
How to use this tool
- Set the tempo: type a whole number from 40 to 240, use the -10, -1, +1 and +10 buttons or the slider, press a tempo name, or use Tap Tempo.
- Choose 1 to 12 beats per bar and /4 or /8. Tap a numbered beat under Accent Pattern to cycle it through normal, accented and muted.
- Pick a sound (Classic Click, Wood Block, Rimshot or Silent Disco), a subdivision (quarter, eighths or triplets) and a volume.
- Press play. Silent Disco flashes the beat without a sound.
- To build speed, turn on the speed trainer and set how many BPM to add, every how many bars, and the tempo to stop at.
Frequently asked questions
- What BPM is Allegro, Andante or Presto?
- In this metronome Andante is 77 to 108 BPM, Moderato 109 to 120, Allegro 121 to 156 and Presto 177 to 240, with Vivace at 157 to 176. Published lists differ and overlap: Wikipedia’s tempo article gives Allegro as 120 to 156 and Presto as 168 to 200, and calls such figures rough. A marking button sets the middle of its range here: Allegro sets 139 BPM.
- How do I set the metronome to a song's tempo?
- Press Tap Tempo, or the space bar, on each beat. The metronome keeps up to your last five taps, drops any older than 3 seconds, sorts the gaps between them and uses the middle one (the upper of the two middle gaps when there is an even number). With five taps, one stray tap has little effect. Taps faster than 240 BPM or slower than 40 BPM set the limit, and the page says so. For an average of ten taps, use the BPM counter.
- How many milliseconds between clicks at 100 BPM?
- 600 ms between beats, 300 ms between eighth-note clicks and 200 ms between triplet clicks. The rule is 60,000 ÷ BPM in milliseconds.
- How does the speed trainer work?
- While it plays, the trainer adds 1 to 20 BPM after every 1 to 32 bars and stops at the tempo you set, from 40 to 240; the tempo field follows. The default adds 4 BPM every 4 bars up to 160, so a 4/4 passage started at 120 BPM reaches 160 after 40 bars, about 70 seconds. The trainer settings are not saved.
- How do I set 6/8 time?
- Choose 6 beats and /8. Each click is then an eighth note and the tempo counts eighth notes, so 6/8 at 120 clicks six times in 3 seconds. To feel 6/8 in two, choose 2 beats over /4 with triplet clicks instead. Tap a numbered beat under Accent Pattern to cycle it through normal, accented and muted.
- Does the metronome keep time in a background tab?
- Not reliably. Clicks are placed on the Web Audio clock up to 100 ms ahead, but a JavaScript timer wakes the scheduler every 25 ms, and browsers slow timers in hidden tabs. Chrome documents timer checks as rare as once a second there. Keep the tab in view while you play.
