Applications

Used by chemistry students, lab technicians, pharmacists, and researchers to convert between molarity and percent weight/volume concentration for solution preparation.

The Formula

% w/v = (M × MW) / (10 × d) where M is molarity (mol/L), MW is molecular weight (g/mol), and d is density (g/mL). For dilute aqueous solutions, d ≈ 1.0 g/mL, simplifying to % w/v = (M × MW) / 10. The reverse conversion is M = (% w/v × 10 × d) / MW.

Fun Fact: Percent concentration (% w/v) literally means 'grams of solute per 100 mL of solution' — dating back to 19th-century pharmacy practices where balances and graduated cylinders were the primary lab tools.
