Applications

HVAC technicians use this calculator to determine the correct refrigerant charge for residential and commercial air conditioning systems based on line set length, diameter, and elevation. Essential for installation, maintenance, and leak repair.

The Formula

Total Charge (oz) = Base Charge + (Line Set Length_ft × Charge Rate_per_ft). For elevation adjustment: add approximately 0.5% per 1000 ft of elevation above sea level to account for pressure differences.

Fun Fact: R-410A has become the most common refrigerant in modern residential AC systems, replacing R-22 (Freon) due to environmental concerns. It operates at much higher pressures, requiring specially designed equipment.
