Applications

Used by homebrewers and winemakers to measure sugar content in wort and must. Essential for determining potential alcohol content and tracking fermentation progress.

The Formula

Brix = (-616.868 + 1111.14·SG - 630.272·SG² + 135.9975·SG³). Plato is approximately equal to Brix for brewing purposes. Potential ABV = (OG - FG) × 131.25.

Fun Fact: The °Brix scale was invented by Adolf Brix in the 19th century. A single degree Brix means 1 gram of sucrose per 100 grams of solution — about the sweetness of a ripe apple.
