Thread Yardage Estimator

Estimate sewing thread in yards and 500-yard spools for a garment, jacket, quilt, pillow, bag or hem from seams, stitch type and thread weight. How it works

Use the Thread Yardage Estimator

A rough scaling factor: the project's seam length is multiplied by it.

Include bobbin

For this stitch only values above 18 spi change the estimate.

About the Thread Yardage Estimator

A size M garment sewn with a straight stitch takes about 88.3 yd of thread: 44.2 yd on top and 44.2 yd in the bobbin, so one 500-yard spool covers it. The estimate uses Coats' consumption ratio of 2.5 cm of thread per cm of seam for a lockstitch, split evenly between needle and bobbin. A serger uses far more: 14 cm per cm, four fifths of it in the loopers.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick the project type, size and fabric weight.
  2. Set the stitch type, thread weight, number of seams, seam allowance and stitches per inch.
  3. Choose whether to count bobbin or looper thread. The large number is the top thread only; buy for the total with bobbin.

Frequently asked questions

How much thread do I need to sew a shirt or dress?
About 88.3 yd with a straight stitch at the default settings, half on top and half in the bobbin, which is one 500-yard spool. Coats advises adding 10% to 15% for wastage, which the tool does not add.
How much thread does a serger use?
Coats puts a three-thread overlock (504) at 14 cm of thread per cm of seam, 20% in the needle and 80% in the two loopers. For a size M garment that is 98.9 yd of needle thread and 395.7 yd of looper thread, and the tool counts 3 cones because each thread runs from its own cone.
Does stitch length change how much thread I use?
For straight, zigzag and serged stitches only above 18 stitches per inch, the density Coats' ratios assume. At 24 spi the default garment needs 58.9 yd of top thread instead of 44.2 yd; from 8 to 18 spi the estimate stays the same.
Does a finer thread weight use less thread?
In this tool, yes, but treat it with care. Thread weight scales the total from ×1.5 for 30wt to ×0.4 for 80wt, so 80wt shows 17.7 yd of top thread for the default garment. A finer thread does not really use less length on the same seam; the factor is the tool's own allowance.
How many spools should I buy?
The tool divides by 500-yard spools and prices them at $6.50 each. For a sewing machine it pools top and bobbin thread; for a serger it counts each cone separately, so a serged project with the looper thread counted needs at least 3.
