About the VAT Calculator
At 20% VAT, a net price of 100 becomes 120.00 with 20.00 of VAT, and a gross price of 100 contains 16.67 of VAT on a net of 83.33. The VAT calculator adds the tax to a net price (net × (1 + rate)) or takes it out of a gross price (gross ÷ (1 + rate)) at any rate, depending on which amount you type.
Adding and removing VAT on 100
| Rate | VAT added to 100 net | Gross price | Net inside 100 gross | VAT inside 100 gross |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 5.00 | 105.00 | 95.24 | 4.76 |
| 10% | 10.00 | 110.00 | 90.91 | 9.09 |
| 13% | 13.00 | 113.00 | 88.50 | 11.50 |
| 15% | 15.00 | 115.00 | 86.96 | 13.04 |
| 20% | 20.00 | 120.00 | 83.33 | 16.67 |
| 25% | 25.00 | 125.00 | 80.00 | 20.00 |
Rounded to two decimals. Removing VAT is not the same as subtracting the percentage: at 20%, a gross 100 holds 16.67 of VAT, not 20.

The tool shows plain numbers with no currency symbol or thousands separator, so the table does too.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I add VAT to a price?
- Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20% that is × 1.2: 250 becomes 300.00, of which 50.00 is VAT. Type the net price and the tool fills in the VAT and the gross price.
- How do I remove VAT from a price?
- Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate: 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100.00 net and 20.00 VAT. Taking 20% off 120 gives 96, which is wrong, because adding 20% back to 96 only reaches 115.20. Type the price in the gross box and the tool does the division.
- What is the VAT fraction?
- A shortcut for the VAT inside a gross price: rate ÷ (100 + rate). HMRC gives 1/6 for the 20% rate and 1/21 for the 5% rate. A 59.99 price at 20% holds 59.99 ÷ 6 = 10.00 of VAT, leaving 49.99 net.
- What are the UK VAT rates?
- GOV.UK lists three: the standard rate of 20% on most goods and services, the reduced rate of 5% on some, such as children’s car seats and home energy, and the zero rate on others, such as most food and children’s clothes. The tool has buttons for 20% and 5%.
- Can I use it for GST or HST?
- GST and HST are charged as a percentage of the net price, just like VAT, so the same three boxes work. There are buttons for Canada’s 5% GST, Ontario’s 13% HST and Australia’s 10% GST, and the rate box takes any other percentage. 113 including Ontario HST is 100.00 plus 13.00, and 110 including Australian GST is 100.00 plus 10.00.
- Does it work for a credit note or a refund?
- Yes. A negative amount gives negative VAT: -100 net at 20% is -20.00 of VAT and -120.00 gross.
