Abdominal Fat Estimation

The Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) is a validated surrogate measure for abdominal/visceral adiposity. Research shows it predicts cardiometabolic risk better than BMI and is simple enough for anyone to use with just a tape measure.

The Evidence

WHtR cutoff of 0.5 ("keep your waist to less than half your height") was established by Ashwell et al. (2012) through meta-analysis of over 300,000 adults. Age-adjusted percentiles use NHANES reference data for population comparison.

Fun Fact: The "waist to height less than 0.5" rule is so simple that researchers call it the "ashwell rule" — you can check your risk with nothing more than a piece of string!
