Average Calculator
Calculate mean, median, mode, range and sum for a list of numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, up to 10,000 values. How it works
Use the Average Calculator
About the Average Calculator
The average (mean) of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 is 30: the sum, 150, divided by the count, 5. The calculator also gives the median, mode, range, sum, count, minimum and maximum for a list of up to 10,000 numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. A value that is not a plain number is named in a message instead of being skipped. For the spread, the Standard deviation of these values link under the results opens the standard deviation calculator with the same list.

| 3, 5, 5, 7, 100 | 5 | 120 | 24 | 5 | 5 | 97 |

| 85, 90, 78, 92, 90 | 5 | 435 | 87 | 90 | 90 | 14 |
| 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 | 3 | 0.6 | 0.2 | 0.2 | None (All unique) | 0.2 |
Each row is what the tool shows for that list. The mean is shown to two decimals; the other figures to 12 significant digits as plain digits.
How to use this tool
- Type or paste numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Negative numbers, decimals and forms such as 1e6 are accepted.
- Read the mean, median, mode, range, sum, count, minimum and maximum. They update as you type.
- If a message names a value, fix or remove it. Nothing is guessed or dropped.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate the average of a list of numbers?
- Add the numbers and divide by how many there are. For 85, 90, 78, 92 and 90 the sum is 435 and the count is 5, so the mean is 87. Paste the list and the Mean (Average) result shows 87.
- What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
- The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle value of the sorted list, and the mode is the most frequent value. In 3, 5, 5, 7, 100 the mean is 24 but the median and the mode are both 5, because one large value pulls the mean up. The median is usually used for skewed data or data with outliers, such as income.
- How do I find the median of an even number of values?
- Sort the list and average the two middle values. For 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 the middle values are 2 and 3, so the median is 2.5.
- What does the mode show when no number repeats, or two numbers tie?
- When every value occurs once, the Mode card shows None (All unique). When several values tie for most frequent, all of them are listed: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 shows 2, 3.
- Why does the calculator reject my list?
- Each item must be a plain number such as 12, -3.5 or 1e6. An item like 3x or 0x10 gets a message that names it, an empty box asks for at least one number, and more than 10,000 values is refused with the count found. Nothing is half-read or skipped.
- How do I average grades or percentages that count for different amounts?
- Not with this calculator: every value counts once. A test score of 90 worth three times as much as a quiz score of 70 has a weighted average of (90 × 3 + 70 × 1) ÷ 4 = 85, while this tool gives the plain mean of 90 and 70, which is 80. Use the Weighted Average Calculator for values with weights.
