Applications

Predict possible blood types for a child based on parent blood types. Used by prospective parents, biology students, healthcare educators, and prenatal counselors to understand Mendelian inheritance patterns.

The Genetics

Blood type inheritance follows Mendelian genetics. The ABO blood group is determined by three alleles (A, B, O) while Rh factor is determined by the RHD gene (D, d). Probabilities shown assume standard allele frequency distributions for each blood type phenotype. For ABO: A is dominant over O, B is dominant over O, A and B are codominant. For Rh: D (positive) is dominant over d (negative).

Fun Fact: The ABO blood group system was discovered by Karl Landsteiner in 1901, for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1930. Rh factor was discovered in 1937 by Landsteiner and Wiener — named after the Rhesus monkey used in the experiments.
