Applications

Used by swimmers, triathletes, fitness enthusiasts, and weight-loss trackers to estimate energy expenditure for pool workouts, open-water swims, and lap swimming sessions. Helps with workout planning, calorie tracking, and training load management.

Methodology & Formula

Uses the standard ACSM formula: Calories = MET × weight (kg) × duration (hours). MET values are sourced from the Compendium of Physical Activities (2011) and vary by stroke type and intensity level. Formula: MET × weight_kg × (duration_minutes / 60) = total kcal.

Fun Fact: Swimming burns approximately 30% more calories than running at the same pace due to water resistance and full-body engagement. A 155-pound person can burn up to 700 calories in one hour of vigorous butterfly!
