Applications

Essential for veterinarians, pet owners, and animal welfare organizations to quickly assess chocolate ingestion severity in dogs and cats. Helps determine if immediate veterinary care is needed based on the type and amount of chocolate consumed.

The Science

Chocolate toxicity is primarily caused by theobromine, a methylxanthine alkaloid found in cocoa beans. Dogs metabolize theobromine much more slowly than humans, leading to accumulation and toxicity at lower doses. The calculator uses established toxicity thresholds based on animal weight and chocolate type.

Fun Fact: The toxic dose of baking chocolate for a 20kg dog is roughly the same as eating a single chocolate chip cookie — so keep all chocolate away from pets!
