Applications

Used by engineers for material identification and selection, by marine and HVAC professionals for buoyancy calculations, by logistics teams to estimate shipping weights from package volume, and by civil engineers for construction load calculations where knowing the density of concrete, steel, or wood is essential to structural design.

How it works

All conversions route through a single base unit (kg/m³). To convert from any unit A to any unit B, we first apply the toBase factor to get the value in kg/m³, then apply the fromBase factor to express it in the target unit. For example, 1 g/cm³ → toBase × 1000 = 1000 kg/m³ → fromBase / 1000 in g/cm³ cancels out, but the same pipeline correctly converts 1 g/cm³ to 62.428 lb/ft³ via kg/m³.

Fun Fact: Water reaches its maximum density of 1.000 g/cm³ at exactly 4°C — not at its freezing point. This unusual property causes ice to float and cold surface water to sink, which drives the seasonal turnover of lakes and creates the oxygenated environment that allows aquatic life to survive under winter ice.
