Internet Ping Test
Time 5 HTTP requests from your browser to this site and see the median, min, max and jitter in ms. An HTTP round trip, not an ICMP ping. How it works
Use the Internet Ping Test
What this test measures
- This measures the time for an HTTP request to this website (CalcChef) to get its first answer, not an ICMP ping, and not the speed or stability of your connection in general.
- Each test makes 5 requests, one after another, for a small file on this site; the first can include opening the connection. The time stops when the response headers arrive.
- Jitter is the average change between one sample and the next. The files are requested with caching switched off, but this site's host or CDN may still answer from its own cache, so the number says how far away this site's answer is, not the distance to any particular server.
- A request that gets no answer within 5 seconds is stopped. Nothing is sent to any other website.
About the Internet Ping Test
The test times 5 HTTP requests from your browser to this website, one after another, and shows their median: samples of 48, 21, 23, 20 and 22 ms give a median of 22 ms, a min of 20 ms, a max of 48 ms and a jitter of 8.5 ms. Read the median as how quickly this site answers your browser right now, and compare it between runs on the same device.
Five samples and what the page shows
| Samples, in order (ms) | Min | Median | Max | Jitter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 48, 21, 23, 20, 22 | 20 ms | 22 ms | 48 ms | 8.5 ms |
| 12.4, 11.8, 30.2, 12.1, 12.6 | 12 ms | 12 ms | 30 ms | 9.4 ms |
| 95, 140, 88, 210, 101 | 88 ms | 101 ms | 210 ms | 82 ms |
| 0.3, 0.4, 0.2, 0.4, 0.3 | < 1 ms | < 1 ms | < 1 ms | < 1 ms |
Jitter is the average of the changes between consecutive samples: in the first row (27 + 2 + 3 + 2) ÷ 4 = 8.5 ms. Times from 10 ms are whole milliseconds, from 0.5 to 10 ms one decimal, and below 0.5 ms < 1 ms.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same as the ping command?
- No. This page asks for a small file, /logo.svg, from this site over HTTP and stops the clock when the response headers arrive, so each time includes the browser's own queuing and the host's handling of the request. The ping command instead sends ICMP echo packets to a host you name.
- Why is the first ping sample slower?
- The first request can include opening the connection to the site. The median is barely moved by one slow sample: in 48, 21, 23, 20 and 22 ms the 48 ms first sample leaves the median at 22 ms.
- What is jitter in a ping test?
- Here it is the mean of the absolute differences between each sample and the one before it, in the order taken. Samples of 95, 140, 88, 210 and 101 ms differ by 45, 52, 122 and 109 ms, so the jitter is 82 ms.
- Does this test my gaming ping?
- No. A game or streaming server is a different host on a different route. This page only times answers from this site's host or CDN, which may answer from its own cache, so the number says how quickly this site answers your browser.
- What is a good ping test result?
- This page cannot grade a number, because it times this site’s host or CDN and not the server you care about. Use it to compare: run it a few times on Wi-Fi, then on a cable or next to the router, and compare the medians. A median that falls when you move closer or plug in, or a jitter that is large next to the median (82 ms on a 101 ms median in the table above), usually points to the local Wi-Fi link rather than the site.
- Why did the ping test stop with an error?
- The page names the reason: the device reports that it is offline, no answer arrived within 5 seconds, the site answered with an HTTP error status, or the request failed before any answer. Samples taken before the failure stay on screen, marked incomplete test.
