Typing Speed Test

Typing speed test with 15, 30, 60 and 120 second runs. See gross and net words per minute (WPM), accuracy and uncorrected errors while you type; pasting is off. How it works

The morning train pulled into the small station right on time. A few passengers stepped onto the platform, shook out their umbrellas, and hurried toward the stairs while the guard checked his watch and waved the signal flag. Good soup takes patience more than skill. Start with a little oil in a heavy pot, add chopped onions, and let them soften slowly. Stir in the stock, drop in the vegetables, and leave everything to simmer until the kitchen smells wonderful. A garden changes a little every day, though you rarely notice it while you are standing in it. Then you go away for a week, come back, and find the beans have climbed the poles and the first tomatoes are turning red. When you are learning a new skill, short practice sessions often beat long ones. Twenty focused minutes each day will take you further than one exhausting afternoon, because your memory needs time between lessons to settle. The old library had creaky floors, tall windows, and a smell of paper and dust that visitors remembered long after they left. On rainy afternoons every table was taken, and the only sound was the turning of pages.

Personal best, 60 seconds: none yet

Personal bests are kept in this browser only.

Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes), never below 0. Errors now are the characters on screen that differ from the passage.

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes. Every character you type counts once, so a mistake you fix with Backspace still lowers it; Backspace itself is not counted. Time under one second counts as one second.

About the Typing Speed Test

Typing speed in words per minute is (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes: 250 characters in one minute is 50 WPM. This typing speed test shows that gross figure, a net WPM that subtracts the uncorrected errors divided by the minutes taken, and your accuracy, over 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds or one full passage. An error left in costs 1 WPM in a 60 second run and 4 WPM in a 15 second run.

A mistake fixed with Backspace costs accuracy but not net WPM. An error left in the text costs both.

Frequently asked questions

How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
Count the characters typed, divide by 5 to get words, and divide by the minutes taken. 400 characters in 60 seconds is 80 WPM, and 150 characters in 30 seconds is 60 WPM.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM subtracts the errors still uncorrected at the end, divided by the minutes taken. In a 60 second run each error costs 1 WPM, so 250 characters with 5 errors left is 50 gross and 45 net. In a 30 second run each costs 2 WPM: 150 characters with 3 errors left is 60 gross and 54 net.
What is a good typing speed?
In an Aalto University study of 168,000 volunteers published in 2018, the average was 52 words per minute and the fastest typists reached 120. The same report says professionally trained typists studied in the 1970s and 1980s typically reached 60 to 90.
Do corrected mistakes count against me?
They lower accuracy but not net WPM. Accuracy is correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes, so 250 characters typed with 10 mistakes fixed along the way is 250 ÷ 260 = 96.2%.
Can I paste text into the typing test?
No. Paste and drag-and-drop are blocked in the typing field, so the clock starts with the first character you type and a score always comes from typing.
Which test length should I choose?
The 15 and 30 second runs are over quickly, so one slip moves the score more. The 60 and 120 second runs average over more text. Finish the passage has no time limit and ends when you have typed as many characters as the passage has, with any errors still in the text counted as uncorrected. A personal best is saved separately for each length and each text set (Prose, Numbers only, Symbols and code).
