About the Laundry Load Size Estimator
Two people washing every 3 days build up about 9 lb of mixed laundry, which this estimator puts in the Standard (3–4 cu ft) washer band. The laundry load size is people × days between loads × 1.5 lb, times 1.0 for mixed clothes, 0.7 for delicates or 1.5 for towels and bedding. The 1.5 lb a day and both multipliers are the tool’s own assumptions, and real households vary widely. Towels (1.0 lb each) and bedding sets (5.5 lb each) can be added per week on top of the clothes.

From 22 lb up the band stays Extra Large however large the total gets, so a total such as 42 lb is shown as 2 loads of up to 22 lb, not the size of one machine. Each row is the tool’s own result for those inputs.

Methodology
Multiply people × days between loads × 1.5 lb per person per day, then apply the selected load-type multiplier: 1.0 for Normal / Mixed, 0.7 for Delicates, or 1.5 for Towels / Bedding. Add towels per week × 1.0 lb and bedding sets per week × 5.5 lb, scaled by days between loads ÷ 7; the multiplier does not apply to them. The estimate is rounded to the nearest 0.1 lb and mapped to the tool’s rough capacity categories.
Assumptions
- Laundry builds up at 1.5 lb per person per day. This is the tool’s own planning figure, not a measured average.
- The 0.7 and 1.5 load-type multipliers and the 8, 15 and 22 lb band limits are also the tool’s own rules of thumb.
- A towel weighs 1.0 lb, the midpoint of Tide’s figures of about half a pound for a small towel and one and a half pounds for a large one. A bedding set (sheets and pillowcases for one bed) weighs 5.5 lb, a rough estimate from a home-laundry blog rather than a measured weight.
- The visual load gauge caps at 100% at or above the 30 lb typical maximum; it is a rough planning reference, not an appliance safety limit.
How to use this tool
- Select the number of people whose laundry is included.
- Choose how many days pass between loads and the kind of items you are washing.
- If towels and sheets go in the same wash, set how many towels and bedding sets you wash each week; keep the load type on Normal / Mixed so they are not counted twice.
- Compare the estimated pounds and capacity band with your washer manual. The pounds are everything that builds up between washes; the tool also gives the number of loads that total takes at the recommended band’s capacity (8, 15 or 22 lb a load, rounded up).
Frequently asked questions
- How full should a washing machine be?
- Beko’s guidance is to fill the drum only so far that you can put your hand in at the top and turn it 90°, leaving room for the clothes to move, and to follow the capacity in your own washer’s manual. This estimator gives pounds, so compare them with the dry-load capacity printed in the manual rather than with the drum’s cubic feet.
- How many loads of laundry a week for a family of four?
- At this tool’s 1.5 lb per person per day, four people make 42 lb of mixed laundry in 7 days. Washing every 3 days gives 18 lb a time, in the Large (4–5 cu ft) band, so about two to three loads a week of that size. Towels and bedding at 1.5 times the weight add to that.
- How many pounds of laundry is a load?
- It depends on the washer, and the tool does not know yours. It maps a total to a band: under 8 lb Compact, 8 to under 15 lb Standard, 15 to under 22 lb Large and 22 lb or more Extra Large. One person washing weekly makes 10.5 lb, a Standard load. For kilograms, divide pounds by 2.2046: 9 lb is about 4.1 kg.
- How much do towels and sheets add to a load?
- The tool counts 1.0 lb per towel and 5.5 lb per bedding set. Two people washing every 7 days make 21 lb of clothes; 10 towels and 2 bedding sets a week add 10 + 11 lb, so the wash is 42 lb, 2 loads in the Extra Large band. Washing every 3 days instead, the same household makes 9 + 9 = 18 lb, one Large load. If you wash towels on their own, choose the Towels / Bedding load type instead: it weighs the wash at 1.5 times mixed clothes, 31.5 lb for 2 people over 7 days.
- How do I tell a medium, large or extra-large load?
- Tide’s load-size guide goes by armloads and drum space: a medium load is an armload or less and fills about half the drum, a large load is a full armload and about three-quarters of the drum, and an extra-large load takes two trips, with room left to fit a hand between the clothes and the drum wall. Those are Tide’s own descriptions; this tool gives pounds and does not map them to Tide’s sizes.
