The Formula
For dogs, modern guidelines (based on genetic studies) state that year 1 equals 15 human years, year 2 adds 9 years, and subsequent years add between 4 and 7 years depending on breed size. For cats, year 1 is 15 years, year 2 is 9 years (total 24), and every year after adds 4 years.
Fun Fact: The old 'multiply by 7' rule for dog years was a myth likely created to encourage owners to bring their dogs to the vet once a year.
