Applications

Used by pilots, air traffic controllers, military personnel, customer service agents, and anyone who needs to spell out names, order numbers, or addresses over voice communication where letters can easily be misunderstood.

The Alphabets

The NATO phonetic alphabet assigns each letter a distinct codeword (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie…) chosen for clarity over radio. Western Union uses common names (Adams, Boston, Chicago…). LAPD uses short, clear names (Adam, Boy, Charles…). All three map 26 letters — and digits 0–9 — to unambiguous words.

Fun Fact: The NATO phonetic alphabet was adopted in 1956 after extensive testing across 31 nations to ensure each word is clearly understandable in multiple languages and accents. "Alfa" uses a non-standard spelling to avoid pronunciation issues in Spanish and Italian.
