About the Random Word Generator

The random word generator draws 1 to 1,000 words from the EFF Long Wordlist, 7,772 common English words of 3 to 9 letters, with the browser's crypto.getRandomValues. Every word has the same chance on each draw. A word can come up more than once unless you tick No repeated words. Filters for length, first letters, last letters and letters inside narrow the list first: 927 of the words have 5 letters.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the random words come from?
From the EFF Long Wordlist by Joseph Bonneau (Electronic Frontier Foundation, 2016, licensed CC BY), which EFF made for dice-generated passphrases. It has 7,776 words; the dice numbers were removed and four hyphenated entries (drop-down, felt-tip, t-shirt, yo-yo) left out, which leaves 7,772.
How do I get random words without repeats?
Tick No repeated words before you press Generate. The words are then drawn without replacement, so a list of up to 1,000 words has no duplicates. With the box unticked, each word is an independent draw and can repeat.
Can I use random words for a passphrase?
The list was built for that, and the draw uses the browser's cryptographic random source. With repeats allowed, each word adds log₂ 7,772 ≈ 12.9 bits, so 6 words give about 77.5 bits (7,772⁶ ≈ 2.2 × 10²³ possible lists). The words are shown on the page and copied as plain text, so treat the screen and the clipboard accordingly.
Can I get only nouns, verbs or adjectives?
No. The list mixes nouns, verbs and adjectives and is not tagged by part of speech. What you get are everyday English words of 3 to 9 letters in lower case, with no names of people or places, picked by EFF for how familiar they are, which suits drawing and guessing games where everyone must know the word.
Can I link to a set number of random words?
Yes: add ?count=12 to the page address and the field opens with 12. The filters take minLength, maxLength, startsWith, endsWith and contains the same way. Nothing is drawn until you press Generate. A count outside 1 to 1,000, or not a whole number, shows a message under the field and draws nothing.
Can I get only 5-letter words, or words that start with a letter?
Yes. Set Minimum and Maximum Letters to 5 and the draw uses the 927 five-letter words. Starts With s keeps 1,087 words, Ends With ing 623, and Contains a*e (an a, then later an e) 1,597. Case is ignored. The list only has words of 3 to 9 letters, so a minimum of 10 matches nothing and nothing is drawn. With No repeated words ticked and fewer matches than you asked for, every match is drawn and the page says how many.
