Frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing as it stands. The words come from a sentence in Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (book 1, section 32) that contains “dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit”. “Lorem ipsum” is the tail of “dolorem ipsum” (pain itself), and the rest is cut up and rearranged, so it is not readable Latin.
How old is lorem ipsum?
The Latin it is cut from was written in the 1st century BC. As dummy text it is documented from the late 1960s, when Letraset printed it on its transfer sheets. The claim that printers have used it since the 1500s is often repeated but has no evidence behind it.
How many words is a paragraph of lorem ipsum?
Here a paragraph is 4 to 7 sentences of 6 to 16 words each. The first paragraph the page shows has 46 words and 294 characters, and the three paragraphs it opens with have 169 words.
Can I get lorem ipsum with HTML paragraph tags?
Yes. Tick “Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags” and each paragraph is wrapped in <p> and </p>, one per line. The tags are included in the character count but not in the word count.
Is the text different every time?
The text shown when the page opens is always the same. Each press of Generate draws new random text from the 63 distinct words of the standard passage.

What placeholder text is for

Designers and developers drop lorem ipsum into a mockup, template or component to see how real paragraphs will sit in it: line length, wrapping, how a card behaves with two lines or twenty. Because the words mean nothing, reviewers look at the layout and not at the wording. Generate by paragraphs for page layouts, by sentences for captions and cards, or by an exact number of words to test a limit. Tick the <p> option to paste the result straight into HTML.

How the text is built

Words are drawn at random from the 63 distinct words of the standard lorem ipsum passage.

  • A sentence has 6 to 16 words, a capital first letter and a period. Longer ones may get a comma.

  • A paragraph has 4 to 7 sentences.

  • With the Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” box ticked, the text opens with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.

The page always opens with the same three paragraphs: 169 words, 1,124 characters. Each press of Generate draws new text, and the word and character counts above the text update. The most it generates is 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 5,000 words. A larger number is cut to the limit, with a notice.

The passage itself is a scrambled extract from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, book 1, section 32, where the Latin reads dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit. It is not readable Latin.
