About the Word Counter
A 5-minute speech is about 650 words at 130 words per minute, and 1,000 words take 5 minutes to read at 200 words per minute. Paste your text into this word counter to get its words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines, with both times worked out for it.
Reading time and speaking time by word count
| Words | Reading time (200 wpm) | Speaking time (130 wpm) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 30 sec | 46 sec |
| 250 | 1 min 15 sec | 1 min 55 sec |
| 500 | 2 min 30 sec | 3 min 51 sec |
| 750 | 3 min 45 sec | 5 min 46 sec |
| 1,000 | 5 min | 7 min 42 sec |
| 1,500 | 7 min 30 sec | 11 min 32 sec |
| 2,000 | 10 min | 15 min 23 sec |

Time = words ÷ words per minute, rounded to the second. 200 and 130 are the two rates the counter uses; your own pace may differ.

Methodology
Reading time = words ÷ 200 and speaking time = words ÷ 130, in minutes. A word is any piece between spaces or line breaks that holds a letter or digit, and a character is one symbol as a reader sees it. The sentence and paragraph rules are listed under How the text is counted.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words is a 5 minute speech?
- About 650 words at 130 words per minute, the speaking rate this counter uses. A 3-minute speech is about 390 words and a 10-minute one about 1,300. If you know your own pace, multiply your words per minute by the minutes you have.
- How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
- 5 minutes at 200 words per minute. 500 words take 2 min 30 sec and 2,000 words take 10 min. Read aloud at 130 words per minute, 1,000 words take 7 min 42 sec.
- Does the character count include spaces?
- The counter shows both. “Characters” includes spaces and line breaks; “Characters (no spaces)” leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. “Hello world” is 11 characters, or 10 without the space.
- How are emoji counted?
- As one character each. Characters are counted as grapheme clusters, so 👍🏽 is 1 and so is a family emoji built from several joined symbols. A limit that is measured in bytes or code units counts them as more.
- Why is the sentence count an estimate?
- Sentence ends are guessed from punctuation. The counter skips the periods in Dr., e.g., initials and 3.50, which also means a sentence that really ends on an initial is missed: “We chose plan B. Then we left.” is counted as 1 sentence.
