Use the Case Converter

Words are runs of letters and numbers. Title Case lower-cases all-capital words and keeps words with a capital after the first letter, such as iPhone. Sentence case lower-cases the rest of each sentence, so proper nouns and acronyms change too. camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE join the words (apostrophes are dropped) and keep letters and numbers only.

About the Case Converter

The converter has nine buttons: UPPER CASE, lower case, Title Case, Sentence case, camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE. Title Case capitalizes every word, including "the" and "of", and lower-cases all-capital words first, so "NASA" becomes "Nasa". camelCase turns "user name" into "userName", and snake_case turns "hello big world" into "hello_big_world".

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix text typed in Caps Lock?
Paste the text and press Sentence case: it lower-cases everything and puts a capital back at the start of each sentence and each line. Read the result before you use it, because names, acronyms and the word "I" come out in lower case. If the text was all headings, press Title Case instead.
Does Title Case follow APA, MLA or Chicago rules?
No. It capitalizes every word, so "the lord of the rings" becomes "The Lord Of The Rings". If your style guide keeps short words such as "of" in lower case, change them by hand.
Why does Sentence case turn "I" into "i" and change names?
It lower-cases the whole text first, then capitalizes only the first letter after a full stop, exclamation mark or question mark followed by a space, and at the start of each line. It knows nothing about words, so "YESTERDAY I MET DR. SMITH IN PARIS." becomes "Yesterday i met dr. Smith in paris.": the pronoun and the place lose their capitals, and Smith keeps one only because "Dr." ends in a full stop. Fix those by hand.
How does camelCase treat spaces, punctuation and accents?
Spaces, commas, hyphens, underscores, apostrophes and emoji are dropped and the next word is capitalized: "hello,world" becomes "helloWorld" and "don’t stop" becomes "dontStop". Letters outside ASCII are kept: "café au lait" becomes "caféAuLait", which not every programming language accepts as a name.
Can it convert to snake_case, kebab-case or CONSTANT_CASE?
Yes. "hello big world" becomes "hello_big_world" in snake_case, "hello-big-world" in kebab-case, "HELLO_BIG_WORLD" in CONSTANT_CASE and "HelloBigWorld" in PascalCase. Words split only at spaces and punctuation, so a name already in camelCase is one word: "userName" in snake_case is "username". To split a name at its capitals, use the Slug to Pascal Case Converter.
Is there a length limit, and can I undo a conversion?
The text can be up to 100,000 characters; above that the buttons are disabled and a message shows. Undo restores the text from before the last conversion once, and typing in the box clears it.

Fixing and formatting text

A paragraph typed with Caps Lock on, product names that arrived in all capitals, a form label that has to become a variable, file or column name: each is one button press. The result replaces the text in the box, so a second button works on top of the first. Undo goes back one step, and Copy puts the result on the clipboard. A link such as ?mode=snakecase&val=user%20name converts the text once when the page opens.

PascalCase suits class names, snake_case database columns, kebab-case URLs and CSS classes, and CONSTANT_CASE constants and environment variables.

The rule for each button

A word is a run of letters and numbers, with apostrophes allowed inside it (don't). A comma, hyphen, space, underscore or emoji ends a word, so hello,world is two words.

  • UPPER CASE and lower case change every letter.

  • Title Case lower-cases each word and capitalizes its first letter, so NASA becomes Nasa. A word with a capital after its first letter, such as iPhone, is left as typed. Every word is capitalized, the and of included, so this is not APA, MLA or Chicago title case.

  • Sentence case lower-cases everything, then capitalizes the first letter of the text, of each sentence (after a full stop, ! or ?) and of each line.

  • camelCase joins the words with a lower-case first word and capitalized later ones, and drops separators and apostrophes: user name becomes userName. Letters outside ASCII stay, so café au lait becomes caféAuLait, which not every programming language accepts as a name.

  • PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE read the words the way camelCase does, then join them: hello big world becomes HelloBigWorld, hello_big_world, hello-big-world and HELLO_BIG_WORLD. Capitals inside a word do not split it, so userName in snake_case is username.
