Applications
Used by pilots to calculate take-off and landing distances, engine performance, and true airspeed. Critical for flight planning especially at high-altitude airports.
The Formula
Pressure Altitude = Field Elevation + (29.92 - Altimeter Setting) × 1000. Density Altitude is approximately equal to Pressure Altitude at standard temperature (ISA), but increases by about 120 feet for each degree Celsius above standard temperature.
Fun Fact: On hot days at high-altitude airports like Denver (5280 ft), density altitude can exceed 7000 ft, significantly reducing aircraft performance. This is why pilots must carefully calculate takeoff distances!
