Retirement Planning Applications

Estimate your nest egg at retirement, model the impact of different contribution rates, factor in expected Social Security benefits, and stress-test your plan against different inflation assumptions and time horizons. Useful alongside 401k and Roth IRA planning.

Future Value of an Annuity + 4% Rule

Projects the lump-sum and contribution growth using FV = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) for the initial balance and FV = PMT · [((1 + r/n)^(nt) - 1) / (r/n)] for periodic contributions, where n is the compounding frequency. Inflation is applied by dividing the nominal balance by (1 + i)^t to express results in today's dollars. The 4% rule targets a portfolio of 25× your annual portfolio withdrawal need (after subtracting Social Security).

Fun Fact: The '4% rule' comes from the Trinity Study (1998), which analyzed US market returns from 1926 onward and found that withdrawing 4% of a balanced portfolio in year one, then adjusting for inflation, survived a 30-year retirement in 95% of historical scenarios.
