Applications
Salaried employees curious about their effective hourly rate, job seekers comparing offers with different pay structures (salary vs. hourly), HR professionals standardizing compensation packages, freelancers setting baseline rates based on desired annual income, and anyone evaluating the trade-off between salary and hourly contract work.
How Hourly Rate Is Calculated
The calculator divides your total annual salary by your total annual working hours to arrive at an exact hourly rate. Annual hours are computed as hours per week multiplied by weeks per year. When unpaid time off is included, the calculator reduces the effective weeks by the number of unpaid days divided by 5 (workdays per week), giving a more realistic hourly rate that accounts for unpaid leave.
Fun Fact: The first federal minimum wage in the United States was $0.25 per hour, established by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Adjusted for inflation, that’s equivalent to about $5.40 per hour in 2025 dollars.
