Frequently asked questions

How much will ₹5,000 a month in SIP be worth after 10 years?
At an expected 12% a year, ₹11,61,695.38. You invest ₹6,00,000 and the gain is ₹5,61,695.38. After 20 years the same SIP reaches ₹49,95,739.60 from ₹12,00,000 invested.
How is SIP return calculated?
As the future value of a monthly installment paid at the start of each month: FV = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n the number of months. 800 a month at 11% for 15 years gives 367,086.05 from 144,000.00 invested.
Can I see the SIP value year by year?
Yes. Open the Year-by-year table under the result. Each row shows the amount invested so far, the returns so far, the returns as a percent of the amount invested and the value at the end of that year. $500 a month at 12% is $6,404.66 after one year on $6,000.00 invested, and $41,243.18 after five years on $30,000.00.
Is the SIP return guaranteed?
No. The calculator applies one constant rate every month, so it shows no market falls or rises. Fund expense ratios, exit loads, tax and inflation are also left out, and real mutual fund returns change from year to year.
Why does another SIP calculator give a lower figure?
Some calculators invest each installment at the end of the month, so it earns one month less. This one invests at the start of the month. Dividing its result by (1 + i) gives the end-of-month figure: $500 a month at 12% for 10 years is $116,169.54 here and about $115,019 when installments go in at month end.
How much SIP do I need for a target amount?
Set Solve for to Monthly investment and enter the target. The tool divides the target by what 1 a month grows to, then rounds up to the cent so the plan reaches it: $100,000 in 10 years at 12% needs $430.41 a month, $51,649.20 invested, growing to $100,001.06. ₹1 crore in 20 years at 12% needs ₹10,008.53 a month.
