About the Tile Calculator
A 10 ft × 10 ft floor of 12 in square tiles with a 1/8 in grout gap needs 100 tiles in a grid layout, and 110 with the default 10% waste. The calculator counts whole tiles in each row and column, rounds up and adds the waste percentage. The pattern (grid, diagonal, offset or herringbone) only sets the starting waste: 10%, 15%, 15% and 20%.

The pitch is 30.3 cm: 13.2 tiles per row round up to 14, and 9.9 rows round up to 10.
How to use this tool
- Pick imperial (feet and inches) or metric (meters, centimeters and millimeters).
- Enter the room length and width, the tile length and width, and the grout gap as a decimal (0.125 for a 1/8 in gap; fractions are not accepted). The tile’s width is laid along the room’s length, so for a rectangular tile try both ways round. For an L-shaped room choose L-Shape and add the second rectangle B; Add area takes up to 8 more rectangles, and Total area takes a floor area instead of sides.
- Add any doors, windows or fixtures under Openings, width × height in the room unit.
- Pick a pattern. The waste percentage fills in with that pattern’s default and can be set anywhere from 0 to 100.
- Read the total tiles, the area and the waste count. Open Pricing to add a price per tile, or a price per box and tiles per box, for the box count and cost. The cost is shown in US dollars.
Frequently asked questions
- How many 12x12 tiles do I need for a 10x10 room?
- 100 tiles before waste and 110 with 10% waste, in a grid layout with a 1/8 in grout gap. Each 10 ft row holds 9.9 tiles with the gap, so the last tile in every row is a cut one.
- How much waste should I add when tiling?
- The calculator starts at 10% for grid, 15% for diagonal and offset, and 20% for herringbone, and you can set any figure from 0 to 100%. These starting points are the calculator’s own, not a published standard. Add more where you expect many cuts.
- Why count tiles per row instead of dividing the floor area by the tile area?
- Tiles come whole, so each row and column rounds up. For a 4 × 3 m floor with 30 cm tiles and a 3 mm gap, area division gives 131 tiles, but the floor needs 14 tiles in each of 10 rows, 140 tiles before waste.
- Which way round do I enter a 12x24 tile?
- It changes the count. The tile’s width runs along the room’s length. In a 10 × 10.5 ft room with a 1/8 in gap, 12 in long × 24 in wide gives 5 tiles per row and 11 rows, 55 tiles; 24 in long × 12 in wide gives 10 per row and 6 rows, 60 tiles. Enter it the way you will lay it, or try both and buy for the one you choose.
- How many boxes of tile do I need?
- Boxes = total tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up. For 110 tiles at 10 per box that is 11 boxes. With a box price entered, the cost is boxes × price, so 11 boxes at $24.99 is $274.89.
- Can I calculate an L-shaped room or several areas?
- Yes. Enter the first rectangle, choose L-Shape and enter the second as B, or press Add area for up to 8 more rectangles. Each is counted row by row with the same pattern and waste and the counts are added. A 10 × 10 ft section plus a 4 × 5 ft section is 110 + 22 = 132 tiles at 10% waste. If you only have a total, choose Total area: 100 sq ft of 12 in tiles with a 1/8 in gap is 98 tiles, 108 with waste, an estimate because there are no rows to round.
