Use Cases

Mobile professionals working on limited data plans can use this tool to estimate potential bandwidth savings from enabling VPN compression. Network administrators can compare compression algorithms to balance CPU overhead against bandwidth savings for site-to-site VPN links.

Compression Ratios

Each compression profile represents typical compression ratios measured for the given algorithm. LZ4 prioritizes speed with ~1.3x reduction; LZO provides a balance at ~1.8x; Zstd offers adjustable compression with ratios from 2.5x to 3.2x depending on the level. Actual results vary based on data entropy — highly random encrypted data compresses minimally regardless of algorithm.

Fun Fact: VPN compression was historically vulnerable to the CRIME and BREACH attacks (2012-2013), which exploited the predictable size increase when specific plaintext bytes were injected into compressed VPN streams. Modern VPNs typically disable compression or use authenticated encryption to prevent these attacks.
