About the QR Code Generator

A QR code stores text, and a phone camera acts on it: a web address opens in the browser. This QR code generator turns up to 2,000 characters into a code at error-correction level M and saves it as a PNG from 100 to 1,000 px wide or as an SVG, with your choice of dark and light colors. A Wi-Fi form writes the WIFI: line that lets a phone join a network by scanning. https://example.com fits version 2, a grid of 25 × 25 squares; longer text needs a bigger grid, up to 177 × 177.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose Text or URL or Wi-Fi network under Content type, then type the link or text, or the network name, encryption and password. The preview updates as you type.
  2. Set the width with the Size slider. The width includes the quiet zone, the 4-module border around the code.
  3. Pick the Foreground and Background colors, keeping dark squares on a light background.
  4. Press Download PNG for qrcode.png, Download SVG for qrcode.svg, or Copy Image to paste the code into a document. Scan it with a phone before you print it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a QR code for Wi-Fi?
Choose Wi-Fi network under Content type and fill in the network name (SSID), the encryption (WPA/WPA2/WPA3, WEP or None) and the password, and tick Hidden network if the name is not broadcast. The page writes the line phones read, in the format the ZXing project documents: CafeGuest on WPA with the password espresso2024 gives WIFI:T:WPA;S:CafeGuest;P:espresso2024;; which is 39 characters and makes a version 3 code (29 × 29). A semicolon, colon, comma, double quote or backslash in the name or password gets a backslash in front, and a name or password made only of hex digits, such as Cafe, is put in double quotes so it is not read as a hex key. The password is not saved and is not added to the page address; a link can fill in the name, encryption and hidden setting with ssid, encryption and hidden.
Why won’t my QR code scan?
The usual causes are low contrast (a pale foreground, or light squares on a dark background, which some readers reject), a missing quiet zone because the code was cropped or placed against a busy picture, or squares too small for the distance. Shorter text gives bigger squares at the same size. Error correction is fixed at level M, so about 15% of the code can be damaged or covered before it stops reading.
What size should a printed QR code be?
The PNG is at most 1,000 px wide, quiet zone included. At 300 dpi that prints about 3.3 inches (8.5 cm) wide at full sharpness; printed larger, each square is enlarged from the same pixels. For a poster or a banner press Download SVG instead: it holds the same code, colors and 4-module quiet zone as vector shapes, so it prints sharp at any size.
How much text fits in a QR code?
At level M the largest code, version 40, holds 2,331 bytes. The box takes 2,000 characters, so plain English text and links always fit, but accented letters and most other non-ASCII characters take 2 bytes or more: 1,166 copies of é are already too long, and the page says so.
Does the QR code expire, and does it track scans?
No. The code holds your text directly, with no redirect through a short-link service, so it keeps working as long as the link inside it does. This page has no way to count scans; the site the link opens sees them as ordinary visits. The image is drawn on this page by a bundled library rather than by a QR web service. To change where a printed code points, you need a new code.
