Audio Recorder
Record your microphone in the browser for up to 10 minutes or 100 MB, with pause, play the take back and download it as recorded or as an MP3. How it works
Use the Audio Recorder
About the Audio Recorder
Press record, allow the microphone, and the page records until you press stop or reach 10 minutes of recorded time or 100 MB; Pause and Resume keep one take. The microphone is released as soon as the recording stops, and the take plays back on the page in the type your browser's recorder chose, such as audio/webm (.webm), audio/ogg (.ogg) or audio/mp4 (.m4a), or as an MP3 at 128 kbps if you convert it.
Audio type and the file extension of the download
| Type the recorder reports | Shown on the page as | Saved as |
|---|---|---|
| audio/webm;codecs=opus | audio/webm (.webm) | .webm |
| audio/ogg;codecs=opus | audio/ogg (.ogg) | .ogg |
| audio/mp4 | audio/mp4 (.m4a) | .m4a |
| audio/mp4;codecs=mp4a.40.2 | audio/mp4 (.m4a) | .m4a |
| (empty) | (.webm) | .webm |
An MP4 file that holds only sound gets .m4a. The type is read from the recorder after recording; the page never converts the audio.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I record audio in the browser without an app?
- Yes, in a current browser with a microphone, on an https page. The browser asks for microphone permission when you press record. If access is blocked, the page says Microphone access was blocked and points you to the site settings in the address bar.
- What format is the voice recording saved in?
- The one your browser's MediaRecorder chooses, shown after you stop as, for example, Your browser recorded audio/mp4 (.m4a). A take made on October 12, 2026 in that type downloads as recording-2026-10-12.m4a. Not every player or editor opens every type, so Convert to MP3 re-encodes the take at 128 kbps as recording-2026-10-12.mp3. If the browser cannot decode its own recording, the page says so; download the original then.
- Can I pause a recording or choose the microphone?
- Yes. Pause stops the take and Resume carries on in the same file; the clock and the 10 minute limit count recorded time only. After the first recording, a Microphone list appears when the browser names more than one input. If the chosen microphone is unplugged, the page says The chosen microphone is not available any more.
- Is there a time limit on audio recordings?
- Yes: 10 minutes or 100 MB, whichever comes first. While recording, the line under the clock shows the size so far against 100.0 MB and that it stops at 10:00. At a limit the recorder stops and keeps everything recorded up to that point.
- Is my recording uploaded or saved?
- Neither. The take is held in this tab's memory until you download it, record again or leave the page; reloading the page loses it. A new recording replaces the old one only once the microphone is open and recording has started.
- Why does it say Nothing was recorded?
- The browser delivered no audio data before the recording ended, so there is nothing to download. Try again. If the browser's recorder reports an error before any data arrives, the page says it stopped before anything was recorded.
