About the Video to GIF
A GIF stores each frame's delay in whole hundredths of a second, so the Video to GIF converter plays 10 fps as 10 cs per frame but 15 fps as 7 cs, which is 14.29 fps. You choose the start, the duration, a width up to 1,920 px and a frame rate from 1 to 30; the starting 3 seconds at 320 px and 10 fps give 30 frames of 320 x 180 from a 16:9 video. Crop keeps the largest centred 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 9:16 area, so the same clip cropped 1:1 gives 320 x 320 frames. Speed from 0.25x to 4x changes how much video each frame covers, not the delay: the 3 seconds at 2x give 15 frames.
Frame rate typed, GIF delay and the rate the GIF plays at
| Frame rate typed | Delay per frame | GIF plays at |
|---|---|---|
| 1 fps | 100 cs | 1 fps |
| 5 fps | 20 cs | 5 fps |
| 8 fps | 13 cs | 7.69 fps |
| 10 fps | 10 cs | 10 fps |
| 12 fps | 8 cs | 12.5 fps |
| 15 fps | 7 cs | 14.29 fps |
| 20 fps | 5 cs | 20 fps |
| 24 fps | 4 cs | 25 fps |
| 25 fps | 4 cs | 25 fps |
| 30 fps | 3 cs | 33.33 fps |
cs is a centisecond, 1/100 of a second: delay = round(100 ÷ fps). At Speed 1x the video is sampled at the same interval, so the GIF runs at the speed of the clip.
Widest GIF that fits the memory limit at 10 fps (width x height in pixels)

For a 1920 x 1080, 1080 x 1920, 1080 x 1080 or 1440 x 1080 video with Crop set to None. The limits are frames x width x height of at most 80 million pixels (about 305 MB of frame memory) and a width and a height of at most 1,920 px. 60 s at 10 fps is the 600-frame maximum.
Crop of a 1920 x 1080 video
| Crop | Area of the frame kept | From the left edge | GIF frames at 320 px wide |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | 1920 x 1080 | 0 px | 320 x 180 |
| 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | 420 px | 320 x 320 |
| 4:3 | 1440 x 1080 | 240 px | 320 x 240 |
| 16:9 | 1920 x 1080 | 0 px | 320 x 180 |
| 9:16 | 608 x 1080 | 656 px | 320 x 568 |
The largest rectangle of that shape that fits, centred, in whole pixels. A portrait 1080 x 1920 video cropped 16:9 keeps 1080 x 608, starting 656 px from the top. The width and memory limits apply to the cropped frames.
Speed: 3 seconds of video at 10 fps
| Speed | Video between frames | Frames | GIF length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25x | 0.025 s | 120 | 12 s |
| 0.5x | 0.05 s | 60 | 6 s |
| 1x | 0.1 s | 30 | 3 s |
| 2x | 0.2 s | 15 | 1.5 s |
| 4x | 0.4 s | 7 | 0.7 s |
Each frame is shown for 10 cs at every speed; the speed sets how far apart in the video the frames are taken. The 600-frame limit therefore allows 15 seconds of video at 0.25x and 10 fps.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my GIF play at 14.29 fps instead of 15?
- GIF delays are whole hundredths of a second. 100 ÷ 15 is 6.67, which is stored as 7 cs, and 100 ÷ 7 is 14.29 frames per second; the page shows the real rate under the FPS field. Rates that divide 100 evenly, such as 10, 20 and 25, play as typed; 24 is stored as 4 cs and plays at 25.
- How long can a GIF be?
- Up to 600 frames, with frames x width x height up to 80 million pixels. At 10 fps and 320 px wide from a 16:9 video that is the full 60 seconds; at full HD, 1920 x 1080, it is 38 frames, 3.8 seconds. Past the limit the page names the widest width or the most frames that fit.
- Does the GIF keep the sound?
- No. A GIF has no sound, and the page says Audio is not included in a GIF when the video loads.
- Which video formats can I convert to GIF?
- Whatever your browser can play. MP4 (H.264) and WebM usually open; MOV opens where the browser supports its codec. MKV, AVI and HEVC video outside Safari usually do not, and the page then says your browser cannot play the file.
- How many colors does a GIF frame have?
- At most 256, the size of a GIF color table. Each frame is reduced to its own 256 colors with NeuQuant: Quality Best, Balanced or Fast is gif.js quality 1, 10 or 20, where 1 searches the palette hardest and is slowest. Smooth gradients can show bands; Floyd-Steinberg or Atkinson dithering breaks them into fine dots, which can make the file larger.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The file is read in your browser, each frame is drawn in the page and the GIF is encoded by two workers loaded from this site; the video is not uploaded.
