DOCX to PDF Converter

Turn .docx Word files into PDFs in your browser, one or several at a time, with selectable, searchable text and each Word page at its own size, up to 500 pages. How it works

Use the DOCX to PDF Converter

The document is converted in your browser and is not uploaded.

The PDF keeps the text as selectable, searchable text (in Helvetica, Times or Courier, the PDF standard fonts, not the Word fonts) when the document uses Western European letters and nothing the text export cannot reproduce. Otherwise the PDF is made of page pictures, and the page says why after the download. Each PDF page has the size of its Word page with the Word margins unchanged. Page breaks come from this preview, not from Word, so they can fall in different places.

About the DOCX to PDF Converter

The converter lays out your .docx in the browser and writes each Word page as a PDF page at the size of that Word page: 210 × 297 mm for A4 or 215.9 × 279.4 mm (8.5 × 11 in) for Letter. The words go into the PDF as text, in Helvetica, Times or Courier, so they can be selected, searched and copied. A document with characters those fonts cannot print, such as Greek, Cyrillic or emoji, or with shapes, charts or rotated text, is saved as page pictures instead, and the page says why. Documents of up to 500 pages convert.

One item that needs page pictures turns the whole PDF into page pictures (JPEG, quality 0.98), with no text layer; after the download the page names the reason. Fonts are matched by the first name in the font list, so a font the list does not recognise is written in Helvetica.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert Word to PDF without uploading the file?
Yes. The document is converted in your browser and is not uploaded; the PDF is built on the page and downloaded from it. Files up to 10 MB are accepted, and only .docx files.
Can I select and search the text in the PDF?
Yes, for most documents. Each line of the preview is written into the PDF as text, in Helvetica, Times or Courier, so it can be selected, searched and copied. Those PDF standard fonts print Latin-1 and the Windows-1252 extras such as € and curly quotes; a document with other characters (Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, emoji) or with shapes, charts or rotated text is saved as JPEG page pictures instead, and those pages have no text. The page tells you which kind you got after the download.
How many pages can the DOCX to PDF converter handle?
500 pages. A 501-page document gets the message This document is about 501 pages long once laid out, followed by the limit and the advice to split the document in Word and convert the parts one at a time. Page pictures are drawn 4 A4 or Letter pages at a time, so a long document does not need one huge canvas.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
Not always. Page breaks come from the browser preview, not from Word, so they can fall in different places. The text PDF uses Helvetica, Times or Courier in place of the Word fonts, with each line stretched or squeezed to its width in the preview, so lines break where the preview breaks them but the letters look different. Fonts not stored in the file (Calibri is often missing on Android, Linux and ChromeOS) change the preview itself, complex formatting and headers and footers can differ, and EMF or WMF images may not show.
Does it convert .doc or .odt files?
No, only .docx. Any other file gets: Please upload a valid .docx file. For a .doc, .odt or other format, open it in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
What is the PDF file called?
The Word file's name with .pdf in place of .docx, whatever its letter case: Report.DOCX becomes Report.pdf and notes.v2.docx becomes notes.v2.pdf. Choose or drop up to 20 .docx files together and each is converted in turn and saved under its own name; the list shows each file as waiting, converting, saved, or not converted with the reason, and Stop after this file ends the queue. The browser may ask to allow several downloads.
