How It Works

Unit Price = Item Price / (Quantity × Unit Conversion Factor)

1 kg = 1000 g
1 oz = 28.35 g
1 lb = 453.59 g
1 L = 1000 ml
1 fl oz = 29.57 ml
1 cup = 236.59 ml

About the Cooking Unit Price Calculator

Unit price is the price divided by the quantity in a common unit: a 2 lb bag of flour at $3.49 is $3.49 ÷ 907.184 g = $0.003847 per gram, and a 5 kg bag at $8.99 is $0.001798 per gram, so the big bag costs 53.3% less per gram. The calculator takes up to five items in grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, millilitres, litres, fluid ounces, US cups or a count, and marks the cheapest per unit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out price per 100 g?
Divide the price by the weight in grams and multiply by 100, or set Show unit price to per 100 g or 100 ml and the tool does it: the 2 lb flour bag at $0.003847/g reads $0.38/100 g, and the 5 kg bag at $0.001798/g reads $0.18/100 g. A $5.00 bag of 1 kg is $0.50/100 g.
Is the bigger package always cheaper?
No. A 16 fl oz bottle of olive oil at $4.99 is $0.0105 per ml and a 1 L bottle at $11.49 is $0.0115 per ml, so the smaller bottle is the better buy and the litre's row reads Best is 8.2% cheaper.
Can I compare a product sold by weight with one sold by volume?
Not fairly. The tool has no densities, so it cannot turn millilitres of honey or oil into grams. When you mix weight and volume it shows a note and picks a best value within each kind, so a volume row is compared only with other volume rows and a count row only with other count rows.
Are ounces weight or fluid ounces?
Both are in the list and they are different units. Ounces (oz) are weight, 28.3495 g; fluid ounces (fl oz) are volume, 29.5735 ml. Use whichever the package prints: net wt is weight, fl oz is volume.
