Favicon Generator
Turn an image or a letter into favicon.ico (16, 32 and 48 px) and PNG icons at 16, 32, 180, 192 and 512 px, with the link tags and a site.webmanifest. How it works
Use the Favicon Generator
About the Favicon Generator
The Favicon Generator turns one image, or a letter icon it draws, into favicon.ico, holding 16, 32 and 48 px images in one file, and five PNGs: 16 and 32 px for browser tabs and bookmarks, a 180 x 180 apple-touch-icon.png, and 192 and 512 px icons for a web app manifest. The files stay transparent or take a white or custom background. It also gives the link tags for your page head and a site.webmanifest to paste.
The files it makes
| File | Size (px) | Format | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| favicon.ico | 16, 32 and 48 | ICO holding three PNGs | The rel=icon link, sizes 16x16 32x32 48x48 |
| favicon-16x16.png | 16 x 16 | PNG, transparent | Browser tab |
| favicon-32x32.png | 32 x 32 | PNG, transparent | Taskbar and bookmarks |
| apple-touch-icon.png | 180 x 180 | PNG on a solid background | Apple touch icon |
| android-chrome-192x192.png | 192 x 192 | PNG, transparent | Android home screen |
| android-chrome-512x512.png | 512 x 512 | PNG, transparent | Android splash and install |
Transparent applies while Background is Transparent, the default: areas the image leaves empty stay clear. White or a custom color fills every file. The Apple touch icon is always on a solid color.
A 1200 x 630 image on a square icon
| Icon | Fit inside | Center crop |
|---|---|---|
| 32 x 32 | 32 x 17 image, 8 px from the top | Middle 630 x 630 from x = 285 |
| 180 x 180 | 180 x 95 image, 43 px from the top | Middle 630 x 630 from x = 285 |
Fit inside keeps the whole image with empty margins; Center crop fills the square and cuts the longer side equally at both ends.
Frequently asked questions
- What sizes should a favicon.ico have?
- This tool writes 16, 32 and 48 px into one favicon.ico, each stored as a complete PNG inside the file, which ICO files allow since Windows Vista. The file starts with a 6-byte header and a 16-byte entry per image, so the first picture begins at byte 54.
- What do I put in the HTML head?
- Put the files in your site's root folder and paste the five tags the page shows, starting with <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="16x16 32x32 48x48"> and ending with <link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">. Copy HTML copies them; Copy manifest copies a site.webmanifest that lists the 192 and 512 px icons, where you change the name.
- Why is the Apple touch icon on a solid background?
- People on Apple's developer forums report that iOS shows the transparent parts of a home screen icon as black; Apple's documentation does not say so. To avoid that, apple-touch-icon.png is painted on a solid color, white unless you choose another under Background for the Apple touch icon. The other files stay transparent unless you set Background to White or a custom color, which fills every file.
- What if my logo is not square?
- Choose Fit inside to keep the whole image with transparent margins, or Center crop to fill the square. A 1200 x 630 logo becomes a 32 x 17 strip 8 px from the top of the 32 px icon with Fit inside, or its middle 630 x 630 with Center crop. The image is never stretched.
- Why is my new favicon not showing?
- Browsers cache favicons separately from the page, so the old icon can stay in a tab after you upload the new files. Check that /favicon.ico opens in the browser at your site's root, then reload with the cache bypassed or open the site in a private window. If the files sit in a subfolder, change the href values in the pasted tags to match.
- Can I make a favicon from an SVG?
- Yes, if your browser can open the SVG. One without a width and height gets its size from its viewBox, or 512 x 512, so it can be drawn; if it still cannot be decoded, the page says so and suggests a PNG, JPEG or WebP. The output is PNG and ICO only; no SVG favicon is written.
