About the Image Cropper
The Image Cropper saves the area you select as a PNG, JPEG or WebP at its exact size in the picture's own pixels, the same on every screen: a 1,000 x 750 selection from a 4,000 x 3,000 photo is a 1,000 x 750 file. Pick Free, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, 3:4, 2:3, 4:5, 9:16, 21:9, Golden 1.618:1 or a custom width:height ratio, drag the frame or type its position and size in pixels, turn the picture if it is crooked, and download a crop of up to 10,000 pixels on a side and 16 million pixels in all.
Largest crop that can be saved, by shape (width rounded from the height)
| Shape | Largest crop (pixels) | Pixels in all |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 4,000 x 4,000 | 16,000,000 |
| 4:3 | 4,617 x 3,463 | 15,988,671 |
| 3:2 | 4,898 x 3,265 | 15,991,970 |
| 16:9 | 5,333 x 3,000 | 15,999,000 |
The limits are 16,000,000 pixels in all and 10,000 pixels on a side, counted in the picture's own pixels. Each row takes the tallest height whose width, height × ratio rounded, still fits. A frame keeps its shape only to within a pixel, so a slightly different crop can also fit: 4,618 x 3,464 (15,996,752 pixels) is under the limit too.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I crop a picture to 16:9 or a square?
- Press 16:9 or 1:1 (or 4:5, 9:16, 21:9 and the others), or press Custom and type a ratio such as 21 and 9. A centred frame of that shape appears; drag it or its corners and it keeps the shape. Free lets you draw any rectangle, and typing X, Y, Width or Height switches to Free. Custom ratios go from 1:100 to 100:1, with each side at most 1000.
- Can I rotate or straighten a photo before cropping?
- Yes. Left and Right turn it 90 degrees, and the fine slider turns it from -45 to 45 degrees; Straighten again undoes both. The crop is taken from the turned copy, so the corners a fine turn leaves empty are transparent, or white in a JPEG. Rotating clears the frame. The turned copy may have up to 16 million pixels: a 4000 x 3000 photo turns 90 degrees, but only up to 9 degrees on the fine slider.
- What size is the cropped image?
- Exactly the selected area in the picture's own pixels, saved in the format you pick and named after the original: My Photo (1).jpg becomes My_Photo_1-cropped.png, My_Photo_1-cropped.jpg or My_Photo_1-cropped.webp. The page shows the size before you download, for example Crop: 1,000 x 750 pixels, from a 4,000 x 3,000 picture. The pixel density of your screen does not change it.
- Can I save the crop as a JPEG or WebP instead of a PNG?
- Yes. Pick JPEG or WebP under Save as and set the quality from 1 to 100; it starts at 85, and a lower number gives a smaller file. JPEG cannot hold transparency, so transparent areas of a PNG become white. WebP is saved only if your browser can write it; otherwise the page shows a message and you can choose another format. PNG stays lossless, with no quality setting.
- Why can't I download a large crop?
- A saved crop is limited to 10,000 pixels on a side and 16 million pixels in all, because phone browsers cannot draw larger pictures. A 4,096 x 4,096 frame is refused with This crop is 4,096 x 4,096 pixels (17 million); 4,000 x 4,000 is the largest square. Select a smaller area: the tool never shrinks the picture without saying so.
- Can I crop a HEIC, SVG or animated GIF?
- SVG files are refused, because a vector drawing has no fixed pixel size. A HEIC photo opens only in a browser that can show it; otherwise the page says the file cannot be shown. An animated GIF opens, but the crop is saved as a single still image.
