Image Resizer

Resize an image to exact pixels, a percent, or cm, mm or inches at a DPI, with the aspect ratio locked or free, and save PNG, JPEG or WebP under a KB target. How it works

Use the Image Resizer

About the Image Resizer

To resize an image and keep its shape, the new height is the new width × the original height ÷ the original width, rounded to whole pixels: a 4000 x 3000 photo at 1200 px wide becomes 1200 x 900. The Image Resizer does that while Maintain Aspect Ratio is ticked, lets you type both sides when it is not, takes sizes in pixels, percent, cm, mm or inches at a DPI, and saves PNG, JPEG or WebP at a quality from 1 to 100 or under a target file size in KB.

Width typed and the height the aspect lock gives

Rounded to the nearest pixel (1000 x 667 at 500 wide is 333.5, shown as 334). Typing a height works the same way.

An original over 16,000,000 pixels starts at the largest size of the same shape the canvas allows; you can type any smaller size.

Pixels = inches × DPI, with 1 in = 2.54 cm = 25.4 mm, rounded to the nearest pixel. A percentage is of the original side and needs no DPI.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest size I can save?
10,000 px on a side and 16,000,000 pixels in all, so 4,000 x 4,000 is the largest square. A larger size shows a message such as 5,000 x 4,000 px is 20.0 megapixels, and Download stays off. The limit sits under the 4,096 x 4,096 pixel canvas that MDN says iOS devices allow, 16,777,216 pixels.
Does resizing make the file smaller?
Fewer pixels usually give a smaller file, and JPEG or WebP at a lower quality smaller still. PNG is lossless, so a photo saved as PNG can be larger than the JPEG it came from. After the download the page shows the result, for example Saved photo-800x600.jpg: 800 x 600 px and the file size.
How do I resize a photo to under 500 KB?
Choose JPEG or WebP and type 500 as the target file size. The page halves the range of qualities from 1 to 100, at most 7 tries, saves at the highest quality that fits and says which one it was. If even quality 1 is too big, it saves at quality 1 and says so; choose a smaller size in pixels then. A target overrides the typed quality.
Which resampling method does it use?
Your browser's own: the image is drawn on a canvas with image smoothing set to high, and the browser chooses the filter. There is no choice of algorithm. Enlarging adds no detail, and the page says so when the new size is larger than the original.
Is the EXIF data kept?
No. EXIF, GPS and the color profile are not copied into the saved file. The picture is drawn upright when your browser applies the EXIF orientation while decoding it.
What is the resized file called?
The original name plus the new size and the format's extension: photo.jpeg saved as an 800 x 600 JPEG is photo-800x600.jpg, and My Holiday (2).PNG saved at 1200 x 900 as WebP is My-Holiday-2-1200x900.webp.
