Where 1900, 2000 and 2100 trip people up

Date code that tests only divisibility by 4 calls 1900 and 2100 leap years, so those two years and 2000 are the standard test cases for any date function. Someone born on February 29 gets the real date only in a leap year: after 2024 the next ones are 2028 and 2032. A rota, lease or payment plan that counts days through February needs to know whether that month has 28 or 29 days. Batch range mode lists up to 400 years at once and counts the leap years in them, for example 24 from 2001 to 2100.

The Gregorian leap year rule

leap year = divisible by 4, and either not divisible by 100 or divisible by 400. A leap year has 366 days and a 29-day February; every other year has 365 days.

The checker shows the three steps. A step that does not change the answer is marked “not needed for this year”: 2023 fails the first step and stops there, 2024 passes the first and fails the second, and 2100 passes the first two and fails the third.

Example: 2100 is divisible by 4 and by 100 but not by 400, so it has 365 days. 2000 and 2400 are divisible by 400, so they have 366. Any 400 years in a row hold 97 leap years, an average of 365 + 97 ÷ 400 = 365.2425 days per year.

Years run from 1 to 9999 and the Gregorian rule is applied to all of them, so a year before the calendar was adopted gets a proleptic answer. A batch covers at most 400 years. The February calendar marks the 29th and starts on the right weekday: February 1 is a Thursday in 2024 and a Sunday in 2026.
