From Monday 12 January to Thursday 12 February 2026 there are 23 working days (31 calendar days minus 8 weekend days), or 24 if the end date counts. Adding working days never counts the start day, so 5 working days after Monday 12 January 2026 is Monday 19 January and 30 is Monday 23 February. Counted from 1 January to 31 December with the end date included. Holiday dates include any that fall on a weekend, which remove no working day: the 9 England and Wales dates of 2026 include Saturday 26 December, so they remove 8 working days. The 12 US dates of 2027 include Friday 31 December, the observed New Year's Day for 1 January 2028.

gov.uk lists 8 of these dates; the tool also marks Saturday 26 December itself as Boxing Day, which changes no count because it is a weekend day.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I count business days between two dates?
- Subtract the weekend days, then the holidays that fall on a working day. December 2026, with 31 December included, has 31 calendar days and 23 weekdays. With the US list it has 22 working days, because Christmas Day is a Friday. With the England and Wales list it has 21: Christmas Day and the Boxing Day substitute on Monday 28 December come off, while Boxing Day itself is a Saturday.
- Does adding working days count the start date?
- No. The count starts the next day, so adding 1 working day to Monday 12 January 2026 gives Tuesday 13 January, subtracting 1 gives Friday 9 January, and adding 1 to Saturday 10 January gives Monday 12 January. Microsoft describes the days argument of Excel's WORKDAY function as the working days before or after the start date, which is the same reading.
- How do I count working days with a Friday and Saturday weekend?
- Choose Custom days under Weekend Handling and tick Friday and Saturday. January 2026, with 31 January included, then has 10 weekend days and 21 working days, against 22 with a Saturday and Sunday weekend. The Friday + Saturday + Sunday option is a three-day weekend, not this one.
- Which US holidays does it skip, and what about weekends?
- It skips the 11 federal holidays that OPM lists. A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before and one on a Sunday on the Monday after, so in 2026 Independence Day is Friday 3 July. In 2027, 1 January 2028 is a Saturday, so Friday 31 December 2027 is marked as New Year's Day observed.
- Does the UK option include Scotland and Northern Ireland?
- No. It is the England and Wales list from gov.uk: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Early May, Spring and Summer bank holidays, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. When one falls on a weekend the next weekday that is not already a holiday is added, so 2027 has Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December.
- How reliable are the Europe and Australia lists?
- They are not official calendars. The Europe list is 5 common dates: 1 January, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 and 26 December. Not every country keeps all five: 26 December is not a national holiday in France or Spain, and Spain keeps Good Friday, which the list leaves out. The Australia list has 8 dates: the seven days every state and territory observes (New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day) and the King's Birthday on the second Monday of June, which some states hold on another day. Substitute days for a holiday on a weekend are set by each state and territory and are not added, so for your state type the dates under Custom Holidays.
