Frequently asked questions

How many working days are between two dates?
Tick Calculate Business Days and pick the country whose holidays apply. The count runs from the start date up to the day before the end date (or through it with Include end date ticked). A US payroll quarter from October 1 to December 31, 2026, with the end date counted, has 66 weekdays and 62 working days after Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Which holidays are taken out for each country?
National ones only. United States: the 11 federal holidays, a Saturday one moved to Friday and a Sunday one to Monday. United Kingdom: England and Wales bank holidays, moved to the next weekday when they fall on a weekend. Canada: the 10 federal general holidays. Australia: the national days plus the King’s Birthday on the second Monday in June. Germany: the 9 nationwide holidays. France: the 11 jours fériés. Holidays on a weekend are only moved for the US and the UK.
Why does January 31 to March 1 give 1 month and 1 day?
A month is complete on the same day of the next month or, when that month is shorter, on its last day. January 31, 2025 reaches a full month on February 28, and March 1 is one day later. By the same rule January 30 to March 1, 2025 is also 1 month and 1 day, January 31 to February 28, 2025 is exactly 1 month (28 days), and February 29, 2024 to February 28, 2025 is 11 months and 30 days. The Date Difference Calculator counts months the same way.
Does it count my state or provincial holidays?
No. Queensland holds the King’s Birthday on the first Monday in October (October 5 in 2026) and most of Western Australia on September 28, 2026, while the list here uses the second Monday in June. Provincial days in Canada, state holidays in the US and holidays of single German Länder are also left out: subtract them yourself, or type them as your own dates in the Working Days Calculator.

How days, months and business days are counted

Total days are the difference between the two dates, the end date excluded unless Include end date is ticked. Hours, minutes and seconds are that figure × 24, × 1,440 and × 86,400, so a daylight-saving change adds no hour. The years-months-days breakdown counts months as the site’s other date tools do: a month is complete on the same day of the next month, or on the last day of a month that has no such day. So 30 January to 1 March 2025 is 1 month and 1 day, 31 January to 28 February 2025 is 1 month (28 days in all), and 29 February 2024 to 28 February 2025 is 11 months and 30 days. Decimal years use 365.2425 days.

Business days are the Mondays to Fridays from the start date to the day before the end date, minus the chosen country's holidays on a weekday.

  • US: the 11 federal holidays; Saturday moves to Friday, Sunday to Monday.

  • UK: England and Wales bank holidays (GOV.UK); a weekend holiday moves to the next free weekday.

  • Canada: the 10 federal general holidays of the Canada Labour Code; not moved off weekends.

  • Australia: the national days plus the King's Birthday on the second Monday in June (Queensland and Western Australia use other dates).

  • Germany: the 9 nationwide holidays.

  • France: the 11 jours fériés, without the Alsace-Moselle extras.

Dates from 1900 to 2200 are accepted; the week table stops at 260 weeks.
