About the Time Calculator
8 hours 30 minutes minus 45 minutes is 7 hours 45 minutes, or 7.75 decimal hours. This time calculator adds or subtracts up to 10 durations given in hours, minutes and seconds and shows the total as HH:MM:SS, decimal hours, total minutes and total seconds. Its second mode gives the time between two clock times: 9:30 pm to 6:15 am is 8 hours 45 minutes, counted into the next day.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I add hours and minutes?
- Add the minutes, carry every 60 into the hours, then add the hours. 7:45 plus 8:15 is 15 hours and 60 minutes, which is 16:00. 3:50 plus 4:25 is 7 hours and 75 minutes, which is 8:15. For a week of shifts, press Add another time: 7:45, 8:15, 8:30, 7:50 and 8:00 make 40:20:00, or 40.3333 hours.
- How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 20 minutes is 0.3333, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. The calculator shows this as Decimal hours under every total.
- How do I subtract a break from the hours I worked?
- Enter the length of the shift first, choose minus, then enter the break. 8:30 minus 0:45 is 07:45:00, or 7.75 hours.
- Can it work out the time between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM?
- Yes. Choose Between two clock times and type 9:00 am and 5:30 pm, or 9:00 and 17:30: the answer is 08:30:00, 8.5 hours. An end time earlier than the start counts as the next day, so a shift from 9:30 pm to 6:15 am is 08:45:00 and 22:00 to 06:00 is 08:00:00. There is no date or time zone, so the span is never more than 24 hours.
- What happens when the total passes 24 hours?
- The hours keep counting, and the same total is shown again in days. 12:00 plus 13:30 is 25:30:00, shown as 1 day 01:30:00.
- Why is my result negative?
- The second time is longer than the first. 1:15 minus 2:45 gives -01:30:00, which means an hour and a half short.
