Common Uses

Project managers use this to build realistic schedules with dependency chains. Freelancers use it to set client expectations around delivery dates. Event planners use it to map venue booking, catering, and setup in sequence. Students use it to plan assignment workflows and see how delays ripple through a project.

How It Works

Uses the Critical Path Method (CPM) with forward and backward passes. Tasks are topologically sorted; earliest start/finish is computed by traversing dependency chains, latest start/finish by backward propagation from the project end. Total slack = LS − ES. Tasks with zero slack form the critical path. Working days are calculated by skipping non-working days of the week.

Fun Fact: The Critical Path Method was developed in the late 1950s by Morgan R. Walker of DuPont and James E. Kelley Jr. of Remington Rand. It was originally used for managing chemical plant maintenance projects and is estimated to have saved DuPont over $1 million in its first year alone!
